please help; can't connect to other computers in LAN

hi,

i 'm sure it's an easy one for many of u;

i was working away and suddenly i can't connect to other computers within my LAN; but the LAN icon in the bottom right says that it's connected; i tried to tighten as well as replug the connections and no luck

BUT when i do an ipconfig, the ip is not what it should be i.e. 192.168.1.102 , instead it's 169.254.119.17

so i guess that's the culprit, but i dont know how to reset it to the correct value?

please help

thank u!!
btw, it's on XP

all the other computers within the LAN see each other fine except for this one

start menu/ settings /network connections / local area connection

highlight the tcp/ip in general then choose properties you know the rest :)

thanks Fruchtgummi for the reminder lol :)

thanks; i figured it out; for some reason, the lan button doesnt have tcp/ip, file sharing, etc... options; but when i tried to unbridge it, it works; not sure why but who cares, it works and i'm happy :)

A friend of mine who has a small network at home suffers from this same problem very often and the changed adress is the same, my guess is that some internet site is the quilty one but I haven´t been able to figure out if it´s true, does any1 knows more about this kind of issue?

yeah, i had the same problem 3 times with 3 diff. computers at my home network with different scenarios tho; the first time happend very long time ago so i dont remember much of it or how i solved it; the second time recently happened when i was adding an extra stick of ddr ram to that computer and suddenly the network connection was messed up.

This third time happend out of the blue, no new installation or anything like that but what's weird was when u rightclick on the lan icon for the properties, it should give u a few things like tcpip, file sharing, etc... but it didnt give me those choices; but when i unbridged it , it was kind of a resetting option of some sort, n then i saw those buttons again; that worked without touching any physical cables. At least now it's recent enough , if i see a similar problem, it will be easier for me to spot

oh well least you guys sorted it :)

Also the info is here to manually set your IP, if needed for future reference, and how you guys resolved your own problems and thats what the forums all about sharing information and helping others. :D
