Hiya Guys and gals,
Just wanna start by saying this is a deeply cool forum. Been on many and I like the atmosphere in here, ie no bitching and back biting.
I've been reading with some interest the many posts on the whole Windies XP Corporate Keys and the PID numbers.
The general idea seems to be that people without the 640 PID shouldn't panic. Well I've just done a clean install with a generated key that gave me a PID of 644, (DOH!).
One thing that has not been mentioned is the fact that the Microsofties have recently revised their EULA on the Windies update site. If you read it carefully it now informs you that they DO collect your PID (but apparently no other personally identifiable info,.....Yeaaah right!). What this means is that if 640's are the only true Corporate keys then no matter what the outcome of your visit to the update site Microsoft know that is not a legit copy of XP accessing it. What this means to the final release of SP1 is anybodys guess, but for alot of people there could be trouble ahead.
I'm also not convinced about the so-called reg-hacking to change your key, I would be grateful to anyone who will inform me of the expereiences with this resulting in definate success, ie a change of PID. I have tried it on a few PC's with differeing results the most ominous being entering any old crap and rebooting to the response that XP is now activated!.
I am really interested in any responses\ideas\experiences with the various opinions on this subject!.
Look forward to hearing from ya
Cheers!
