hmmmmmmmmmmmm FIRST PERSON SHOOTERS would be the highest rated here with QUAKE /UNREAL type games topping the mark no doubt 
lots play R.P.G. games here too
best to have a play with a few games one word of advice though would be the faster your connection the less chance u have of gettin beaten
broadband is your best bet for the best experience in gaming

Hi there....as viper has stated the most common online games are fps,rpg & mmorpg.
The major players in the online fps scene are still quake 3 and unreal tournament plus counterstrike is still popular, there are many fps titles but you are gonna have to experiment to find the one that suits your playing style. Playing standard rpg's online are not my thang but a good one to try is neverwinter nights. However i do like mmorpg's(massively multiplayer online role playing games) these are rpg's but are only playable on line plus you have to pay a monthly subscription to be able to play, common examples are Everquest,Asherons Call 2,Anarchy online, Star Wars Galaxies,Horizons Empire Of Istaria.

Not quite as freeform as some FPS, since you play as an American Soldier (but are seen as "the other side" by the opposition.
You have to qualify in appropriate disciplines - and additional ones to take on a specialist role such as Sniper.

If you have Half-Life (and if you dont there are places you can legally download it free) then get any of the following:
1. Day Of Defeat
2. Counter-Strike
But if you get CS, my advice is get version 5.2 (one of the old betas) and look for 5.2 dedicated servers as in my opinion, and many others, it was the best version. But still the new Gold releases aint at all bad!
After that, hmm try Battlefield 1942 online. Just watch for the campers
