New DVD Copy Protection

I have been slowly backup my DVD collection. I have done over 100 movies so far BUT their is one which I am unable to do.

That is Robert Altman's NASHVILLE DVD. It is an original Region 1 NTSC version released from Paramount. The total DVD data is 8,220,478 bytes and I have tried various software packages such as Pinnacle Instant CD, CloneDVD, etc. They all reduce the data to fit snuggly onto one DVD-R media and it initially looks like it will work. I get the original Paramount screen and the menu but as soon as I start the movie I get a strange blue screen of death. On that screen it displays the following message...."This player is incompatible with the region marking of this disc."

This message is definitely encoded within the menu on the disc. The copies have the region protected removed according to DVD Decrypter. I have three ways of playing DVD's and they are all completely region free. PowerDVD with AnyDVD region free software on my PC, DVD Region X For Sony PlayStation 2 and a modified region free DVD player. Yet all three devices produce this error screen and will not play the movie or even jump into a scene.

Now the funny thing is....when I rip the DVD onto my HD using DVD Decrypter, those original sized files work perfectly. I personally can't find a solution to this problem unless one day I am either able to write DVD9 Media or I can somehow modify the menu or create a new menu to play the movie. Just as one more afterthought....I can drag and drop those individual VOB files onto PowerDVD and yes they do work. But of course I need to do that five times to view the whole movie and features like subtitles, commentary etc do that work.

Has anybody else come across this or any similar copy protection on their DVD movies?

I believe it's called RCE protection - there are tools - including some of the popular DVD-rippers, which can remove it.

The one you are using, should do:

Another DVD Problem

FANX ALOT M8!!! :D

Even though I already had DVD Decrypter set with remove RCE Protection, under the general menu it was only looking for RCE Protection in Region 4 (since I live in OzstraliYAH!). Once I changed it to Region 1 and ripped it again, the backup DVD now works 100%.

There is another DVD though with another problem. This one is a music DVD called Neil Young's "Red Rock Live Neil Young Friends & Relatives".

It seems that I am unable to rip one of the files. The original DVD looks like this...

Volume in drive H is NEIL_YOUNG_REDROCK

Yet when I rip it with either DVD Decrypter or SmartRipper, it truncates VTS_01_5.VOB to only 524,288KB rather than the 1GB filesize. Needless to say I am unable to re-encode this incomplete rip with any program (Pinnacle Instant Copy, CloneDVD, etc). I have tried to rip it with my Pioneer DVD-Recorder (A05) and my LiteOn LTD163D DVD-ROM Drive.

Is there any other alternative DVD Ripping programs I should try or a solution to this problem?

If you double click the VTS_01_5.VOB file off the original DVD, does it play correctly or is there some others tuff in there. Many times, they add extra stuff withing the vob files. Also play the end of the ripped VTS_01_4.VOB and then the start of VTS_01_5.VOB, does the movie flow from one to the other. Same at the end of VTS_01_5.VOB to the start of VTS_01_6.VOB.

Yes the end of that file is continued on in the begining of VTS_01_6.VOB so it is one continuous movie stream.

I tried to drag and drop that file from the original DVD onto the hard drive and then it did retain the 1,073,688,576 byte file size. Unfortunately in that mode it still had all the GAY protection so InstantCopy, CloneDVD, etc all threw up and vomited an error on my screen!

Just can't seem to rip that one file with any dvd ripping program on both of my DVD Drives (Pioneer A05 or LiteOn LTD163D). Maybe it has some kind of mastering error which makes the ripping programs think it is a different file size or it encounters some kind of EOF (end of file) code half way and just stops?

Sounds like you copying the DVD in IFO mode, suggest you copy the whole DVD in File mode, then Shrink, CloneDVD, or whatever from there.

There is another possibility, if I understood the problem right? (playback problem).
A fiew months back I was having a retarded back&forth session with a mod from another forum. I braught up a new region protection that movie companies were going to start using.
This new region lock will not allow you to play region specific DVDs on All region players.
Typically All-region players are set as 0 (zero), which always basically allowed you to watch any region DVD (from zones 1-6 I believe), but now these newer DVDs will not playback on those 0 set players. They have to match the region code of the DVD. So you have to set your DVD player to the same region of the DVD movie with a code or something (if your player supports region hack coding).
**NOTE** This is not the same region coding that you can just bypass with software that allows your player to be all region as it is a hardware & software lock code (it's RCP-2 protection which means you will not be able to play them on any RCP-1 drives). Only if the software allows you to set region coding for hardware and software will it work.
Also note that the same types of rules apply to standalone DVD players.

I hope I made it clear lol.

PS
A fiew months back it was unclear though if movie companies were going ahead with this and when exactly they would start with it. Maybe the time has come? (but fear not, there are always ways of allowing you full use)

Hi shadoe_phantom, good to see you again. That was implemeted a while back actually but not on all DVD's, infact very few. Probably not the problem here as DVD Decrypter will rip a DVD regardless of its region or the region of the DVD-ROM. You may not be able to play it, but you will be able to rip it.

A true multi region DVD is not set to Region 0, infact it has all Regions 1,2,3,4,5,6,7 and 8 turned ON. When authored you just turn on the region you want it to be. Many here in Oz are Region 2 & 4. I've even seen the odd NTSC as Region 1 & 4 !!!! Most multi-region ones are 1 to 6. Region 7 is reserved and Region 8 is for Airlines, Hotels, Oil Rigs etc. There is no such thing as Region 0 but as you say, many DVD Players were set to Region 0 that appeared to bypass any region blocking. It didnt take Holywood long for them to implement RCE protection to fix this problem.

HMMMM REGION 8 for airlines you say chickeman !?

lol is that for when if they are watching an in-flight movie and pass over a region 2 country then a region 3 and land in a region 4 !? lol !?

makes you wonder !?

perhaps if the bigwigs didnt make them region specific they would sell more by export !? or maby they never thought of that doh !! ;););)

That was not a question by the way bud just a thought hehe !! :D

btw maby REGION 7 could be for submarines and space shuttles !? lol :)
