Networking comps with XP and 2000

I'm trying to network my computers togather to get files off the 2000 comp. Eventually I'm going to run the internat thought the switch and connect them to gather can i do that? Anyway why isn't the XP comp picking up the 2000? plz rply asap! thank you

Are they both on the same workgroup? Right click My Computer icon, click on Properties then Computer Name to verify that both are on the same workgroup. Is firewall configured for networking? Are you connecting computert to computer? If so you need a crossover cable not just a regular Cat5. Could be many things but that's a good start.
