Nero Freezes on Start when Firewire CDR Drive is active

I have two working bootable drives in the same AMD XP 2000+ system. . . In one system all my CDR/DVDR software plays nicely (nero 5.5.10b) with all my recordable drives (Pioneer A04, SCSI Yamaha, Firewire Yamaha).

But when I boot from another drive (in the same computer) I recently formatted/fresh installed Win XP, Nero hangs at the 'searching SCSI' message whenever I have my Yamaha firewire CDR drive connected -- Nero freezes until I turn off the firewire CDR drive. Windows XP recognizes the drive fine -- I can see it in explorer and access any files on CD disks in the drive. I have uninstalled Nero once and reinstalled it to no avail.

I have latest ASPI layers (4.72) loaded on both hard drives. I have seen nothing relevant on Nero's FAQs.

Any ideas short of reinstalling windows XP?

first of all: Welcome to our forum :)

Do you really need the Adaptec ASPI (4.72)? Nero use it's own ASPI.

try to dump the Adaptec one, because 4.7* is problematic;

also disable the navive XP burning engine "IMAPI burning engine" via services configuration;

Actually, ASPI layer 4.72 is my primary suspect -- perhaps it is corrupt in some minor way. . . However, I've tried reinstalling it to see if that would fix the problem but that didn't do it. Do you know how to totally uninstall ASPI? The way Nero freezes when the popup message "scanning SCSI/IDE bus" or some such indicates to me an ASPI problem of some kind.

When I'm done cutting a DVD (doing that while I type here), I'll try disabling the IMAPI service and see if I can access the drive through Nero with IMAPI disabled. I don't think that is the problem, however, since IMAPI is enabled on the drive where all my software and hardware coexist peacefully.

Thanks for the ideas and quick response -- any other thoughts?

Hogdriver: have u tried other software except Nero?

I use firewire as well: no problemo here! ( and Aspi 47x installed because of other soft)

I have a Sony DRX-500UL DVD-+/R/RW Firewire/USB2.0 External drive connected by Firewire and use both Nero 5.5.10.15 and Adaptec ASPI 4.72 without any problems at all.

tried going back to ASPI 4.6 -- didn't help

tried installing new Nero 5.10.15 -- didn't help

Nero is still freezing at "Scanning SCSI/IDE bus -- Please Wait" until I turn the firewire drive off.

Just to reiterate. . . on the exact same machine/hardware. . . (just booting from two different hard drives both with Win XP SP1), the configuration on one drive (my maxtor 120GB IDE) works fine, but when booting from my SCSI drive, that's when the problems occur.

Good ideas from all, but we're not there yet? Any more ideas? Thinking that re-installing OS may be the only way to fix this. . .

sorry, i have no ideas more; :(
maybe you should try to PM our forum member "scarecrow", he is famous for his great knowledge; seems he doesn't found your thread till yet;

Do you have a dedicated firewire IDE card, or your firewire port is on another IDE card (say the graphics card)?
And if you have an Adaptec SCSI card installed then you don't need to install ASPI at all (under XP), unless you use aspi based burning programs. In that case the safest bet would be putting wnaspi.dll locally (either the Adaptec one or the hacked Nero one), to avoid conflicts.
In any case, visit Ahead's FTP ( ftp:ftp6.nero.com )and get a small utility called RegistryChecker. Run it in your SCSI boot system, and see if it will report any registry problems. If it stays silent then you are OK (sort of...).
