Nero Express CD-R versus CD-RW format

When using Nero Express on a Windows 98 SE machine, Pine (Pioneer) DV-105 CD and DVD Writer. The application always seem to require a CD-RW CD. It doesn't sem to matter if I am copying a few files or making a disc copy. All seems to go fine until I need to put in the CD I want the files copied to. Every time I am required to use a CD-RW CD instead of the CD-R CD's I should be able to use. Is there a setting I'm missing?

Is this a Nero 5.5 bundle version that ONLY offers Express (I'm no fan of the Express style).

Any other CD-R software loaded - such as CloneCD with the "hide CD-R media" option active.

What is the CD-R media? - though even if its truly atrocious, the writer should still make the attempt.

What problem does it have? does it attempt the burn and fail, or does it complain about the media.

Yes, this is the bundled version that only offers Nero Express. (OEM 5.5.10.12)
No other CD-R software loaded. (The previous device was a CD/DVD Reader only.)
It doesn't seem to matter what the media is. I tried to copy the whole Nero CD and I tried to copy Word files, with the same result. The image is built/files copied and all appears to work fine until, in the case of the CD copy, the CD Writer ejects the CD I was trying to copy and I am requested to insert a writable CD. I insert my blank CD-R CD and the application comes back with an error that a CD-RW CD is required.
Just in case it makes a difference, I did install InCD, but found that it conflicted with the CD Driver and the system hung when Windows started up. I removed the InCD application and the CD was recognized and driver loaded fine.
Am I missing something, shouldn't the application write to a CD-R CD with no complaint?

Bizarre - I have Nero 5.5.10.42 (Bundle but not limited to express) on a Win98SE system, and it takes the most awful old media I throw at it.

Got something else running, so I daren't try Express now as it's always been unstable for me.

Can't remember if 5.5.10.12 was an ok release for Win98 - there were a few bad 5.5.10's - might be worth upgrading it to 5.5.10.54 - the final 5.5.10 release. It'll still be Express, of course.

If you save the log, it might show some possibly conflicting drivers.

Can you get it to read the media properties?
(MORE> Disc Info)
Does it identify CD-R media there?

Are you sure it asked for a CD-RW - I just checked, and it says CD-R/RW

- a new CD of either type, because it doesn't like the media (or lack of) inserted.

Please don't be offended, but you aren't making the same mistake a friend of mine did (yes, It really DID happen) - they put the CLEAR protective from the top of a shrinkwrap pack in - and wondered why it didn't work.
They weren't even that new to CD-R, but it was the first lot of uncased media they'd ever used - I know it's true - I got them the pack of media from a computer fair.

LOL....no offense...anything is possible. Actually, I am not in front of the machine. I am asking these questions for a friend that is not computer savvy enough to ask the questions. I have tried the program on his PC and got the same result. When the box comes up to insert the recordable media, the media type the application is looking for is CD-RW. I am inserting a CD-R CD and get an error message back that it is not the correct media. Yes, the CD-R being used is blank, fresh OUT of the wrapper.
I have not heard back from my friend on the outcome from the upgrade yet. He is away for a time over Xmas, so my next post might not be till closer to the New Year.

Success

Thanks so much for the assistance. I finally got a chance to sit in front of the machine instead of remotely and it all came clear quite quickly.

The reason Nero wasn't recognizing the CD-R format and only CD-RW format, it because it wasn't recognizing the CD Writer. I went into COntrol Panel/System and found an excalmation mark on the Secondary Hard Drive Controller and NO CDROM. I removed all Hard Drive Controllers and rebooted. The Controllers were reloaded, the CDROM found and drivers loaded.

Nero now recogizes the CD Writer and CD-R format. All is well, as long as the Hard Drive Controller cooperates. (Cheapo eMachine. NOT recommended.)

Thanks again,
Daryl

That really is bizarre - under those conditions, I'd have expected it not to work at all.

First law of bughunting - verify the basics first.

If the machine has a Dual PCI controller an is only half-recognising it (or adds a single controller as well), that is common for a machine with an Intel Chipset later than reconised by Win98 - and normally fixed by the Intel Chipset Update. The Intel TX and later chipsets (last of the original Pentium chipsets and beyond) generally need the chipset update for satisfactory operation in Win98.
