Nero can't find CD-Writer in Win2K - plz help

I have an (old) external CD-Writer: HP 7200 and W2k, but Nero 5.5.8.2 (or previous versions) doesn't recognize it as a CD-Writer, only as a CD-ROM, so I can't burn: just make images. But it works fine in Win98.

I thought that the CD-Writer wasn't supported in W2K, but it works (more or less) with NTI CD Maker, so the problem should be elsewhere.

Nero's homepage suggests putting a copy of wnaspi.dll in Nero's directory, but it didn't work. I've updated to latest aspi - without success either.

So, for the moment, I have to boot in Win98 in order to burn :(

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated, folks!

Does this writer have any specific drivers??? At the past I had some problems with my TEAC CD-R56s drive with nero and I installed a WinOnCD driver that was packes together with the drive. Check if there are any drivers out, because some programs may need them to fully recognise your drive.

Thanks man, you were right ! :)

I was using old drivers - I found some new ones and now Nero identifies the CD-writer as a writer (haven't burned anything yet, but I guess it'll work)

Hi Borogovio,

Can you tell me where you found those drivers. I also use this burner (lend from my brothers work) and I haven't been able to make it work on windows 2k neither XP. I downloaded the drivers from HP and on windows 2k i got the blue screen of death. On XP it installed ok, but when burning the CD was unusable (ASPI Layer ok). After that I found another one, same result.

If you don't mind sharing the link, it would be great.

Cheers and thanx in advance,

 The damned thing doesn't work !!!
With the new driver, Nero identifies it as a writer, but does not burn: it rejects all the blank CDs saying they can't be written.
With NTI CD-Maker the burns goes so-so: many coasters & FileCD doesn't find the writer ...
If you want the drivers, I can send them to you - I got them from somewhere in HP's site, don't have an exact link

check the settings of your port and install the mainboard's chipset drvers to identify the the port better. Then reinstall the drivers of HP...

Well, to have your aspis to it's former layer version, use the ASPi reset tool and the nupdate to v4.60.1021. Then, check for communication by installing both the drivers of your mainboard chipset and CD-RW external drive...

A couple of questions: can you give me a link for the ASPi reset ...?
And could you explain a little further? I don't quite get that on the mainboard ...

borogovio

Please let me know which motherboard do you have (and if possible what chipset is based on). A CD-Rom which came with it, contains drivers that have to be installed, so that your system will run perfectly and stable, recognising all the hardware devices the motherboard consists of (ports, controllers, chipset) at once.

Secondly, here is the ASPI reset tool:

He might also got a problem with the mainboard chipset drivers! It happens with some USB devices (especially HP printers) if the USB root hub is not properly installed or updated by the mainboard support CD... I have faced such problems with mainboards based on INTEL i815e and VIA chipsets... And this has NOTHING to do with ASPIs... Who said that ASPIs have any connection with the mainboard chipset drivers???

Thanks for the info. I will give it another try, but as I stated I used the drivers from HP homepage and had the ASPI Layer instaled. On 2k I got the BLUE Screen of DEAD and on win XP it really worked, it recognized the burner and I burned a CDRW using NERO. Result a blank CD (nothing on it). I will give it another try as i Stated above, but if you don't see me around for a couple of days, you know, I had to reinstall everything  . But look at the bright site, it is nothing we don't keep doing at least twice a year :) (this year, next time will be the 8  (one XP, 4 2k and 3 ME :D )

Thanks again.

Cheers,

As for me, I'm downgrading the ASPI as you have recommended. Hope it works. But what still puzzles me is that NTI Cd Maker works rather well ...

I downgraded the ASPI to 4.60, but Nero can't write still: it rejects all the blank CDs saying they can't be written.

I don't know if it is important, but I think didn't specify before that the CD writer is an external one, but not USB: it is connected via parallel port LPT1.

As for the mainboard, I dont know which one do I have. As the poem says:
' You may charge me with murder , or want of sense
- we are all weak at times -
but the slightest approach to a false pretense
was never among my crimes'. :D
The truth is I installed Win98 SE and Win2K directly from their respective CD and I only used the manufacturer's CD with the drivers to install the sound card ... and I've never worried since.

You know, I have it from those days where men were real men, women were real women and the small furry creatures of alpha centaury were real small furry creatures of alpha centaury ... and when the latest CW-writer was a 2x like mine is.

It really is a piece of junk, but as I don't burn too often I haven't disposed it yet.

I didn't know there existed such a drive case: I'm positively getting one ... or a new burner.

Thanks again.

Out of curiosity: do you live in this forum? You are present in all the threads I've seen, always with a quick reply !

Check if the motherboard recognises the ports better (parallel and USB) with the supplied driver from the support CD. Also enable ECP+EPP 1.9 function to the parallel port from the BIOS. Only when ECP+EPP is selected yu will be able to recognise and use your writer at its full capacity.

Please identify your mainboard. If possble do a BIOS upgrade and try switching the ECP+EPP v1.7 and v1.9 modes. Install also the drivers provided by your mainboard support CD for windows. Then, let me know again.

It's a VIA Chipset Mainboard M6VBE_A.

I finally found the CD with the drivers, but they are dated 1999. The contents of the CD is:

Drivers & Utilities Revision Platform
------------------- ------- --------

*VIA Bus Master IDE Drivers 2.1.44 Win98/98SE/NT40
*VIA AGP VxD Driver 3.55 Win98/98SE
*VIA USB Patch 1.07 Win98/98SE
*Chipset Functions' Reg Utility 1.6 Win98/98SE
*ESS Solo1 4.05.00.1115 Win98/98SE
4.05.18 WinNT40
*Microsoft DirectX 6.1 Win98/98SE

When I installed Win2000 I only had to look for the audio (ESS Solo) driver, so I guess it's useless to install the drives from the CD? I mean, they should be at least as old as W2k defaults?

I've been lookingfor updated drivers, but couldn't find none.

Download the latest patch at h**p://w*w.via.com.tw (VIA 4in! drivers) and install it to Win2000. Then, restart your PC. Only WinXP offer good performance with their drivers with VIA chipsets, not the Win2k. Win2k need the driver patch installed.
