nero burning at 1x instead of 8x, help!

i have a pioneer a08, which i got two weeks ago, i had nero 5.5 but it didn't recognise the writer so i switched to nero 6. when i select the write speed at 8x it says starting burn speed at 8x, it gives the time remaining as 8 min but it takes close to an hour, it must be burning at 1x, the writer is an oem version but i'd say the problem isn't with the writer. i could be wrong. on the supported recorders on nero's web site it doesnt list the a08. does anyone know whats going wrong. the nero i have is not a demo version.

If it's the A08 (retail), is the Nero6 the one it came with (in which case it SHOULD support it, as the DVR-108 .. A08 is only a marketing label for the retail, while A08XL is an quietdrive version).

Other reasons for getting a long burn time...
1. Conflicting software (though you're luck if a long burn is the only problem!)
2. Not keeping up with the data rate, so dropping into underrun recovery all the time
3. Drive doesn't like the media (though I thought you didn't see the 8x speed, if the drive wasn't loaded with 8x supported media)

You can use DVDInfo Pro to identify your drive, and its firmware; because A08 is a retail and A108 is OEM. Sometimes, you have to update its firmware to read and write low quality discs.

Use a good disc (Pioneer, TDK, Verbatim, RiTek) to test.

Website to download firmware:

http://www.pioneeraus.com.au/computer/dvdwriters/firmware.html

(I live in Australia!)

Be careful! Check your drive ID, download the right firmware, follow instructions. Do not leave any disc in the drive during update firmware.
