New to DVD burning and need some guidance

first id like to say thanks to everyone who wrote the tutorials on how to do things the free way, i like them but it takes to much time IMO to make a movie.

what is the best program i should get just to copy dvds from dvd reader to a dvd with my burner? also what are opinions on the burner i have (TDK 440 N). I am new to all this dvd burning stuff but am far from computer illiterate. please tell me what u think even if its bad. hopefully you will see me around here alot...thx

also plz give me some media suggustions because i only got a couple disks for xmas and will be needed more shortly

the TDK 440N is a rebadged NEC 1300A, which i own myself. the official firmwares don't include support for cheaper and more obscure media, but Herrie writes his own firmwares and tries to support as much media as he can.

u should probably experiment with the various dvd transcoding programs to see what u'd like to use. most have a trial/demo, and some (such as dvdshrink) are free.

Hey joshk6656, Welcome to the forum. The best quality at the fastest time for me to backup a retail dvd is to rip it to the hard drive with dvd decrypter, shrink it with dvd2one, and burn with clonedvd. If you happen to have a dvd that is under 4.7gbs with copy protection, then the easiest way is to use anydvd and clonedvd with a dvd-rom and a dvd burner you can rip it on the fly. If your dvd is under 4.7gbs with no copy protection then I would just use alcohol120% to burn it on the fly.

ive been ripping it with dvd decrypter shrinking it with DVD Shrink 3.0 Beta 5 and then burning it with burnatonce. is CSS common on most new cds? is your method faster then this?

btw which media wasnt supported that u had to upgrade your firmware for?

CSS is common on most dvds. Except for the software, I don't think that there is any real speed difference in the 2 methods we use.

alright Blane thanks for your help i was just wondering because i used dvd x copy xpress to burn old school last nite and then i tried bad boys 2 and it wouldnt let me, so i basically uninstalled all the programs i was testing and just stuck with the method i said earlier.

I've never used dvd x copy but, all my friends that have say that it sucks and makes bad quality discs.

yea i did movie only and it wasnt bad, entire disk prly sucks....so i should use alcohol120% for non CSS and under 4.7gig? wheres this found, i can buy it if needed.

for any single-layered dvd (with or without CSS), u can use DVD Decrypter if u don't want to pay for additional software, but u won't be able to copy on the fly. otherwise, if it's single-layered and doesn't have CSS, u can use any dvd-to-dvd copying program (nero, alcohol, etc).

u have to rip it, then burn it rite? is there a high quality way of just dvd to dvd? or ripping brings the best quality?

hmm i never even considered nero..ill have to look into that i have nero 6 i think my bro bought it for me, anyone ever see the results with it?

are u referring to a direct copy of a single-layered dvd? if so, a direct copy is as good as the quality will get.

if u want to burn the contents of a dual-layered dvd to a single-layered dvd, the quality will depend on the method and programs u use.

ive been ripping it with dvd decrypter shrinking it with DVD Shrink 3.0 Beta 5 and then burning it with burnatonce for all my movies. but i will start to check if they are single layer non css and use nero. it should be perfect if i use nero for a single layer then?

yes, although using dvd decrypter has its advantages, such as (optional) removal of region and RCE protections, as well as PUOs. of course, any dvd with these protections is also certainly going to have CSS encryption as well, so u wouldn't be able to use nero anyway.

alright thx for all ur help even tho i dont know what, removal of region and RCE protections, as well as PUOs, are i usually take off the other languages cause why would i want them? i only know english so why would i want french...does that make the video better if i remove them? i thought it would because it freed up space, but like i said im new to this.

also can u recommend some media?

removing unwanted items will help for dual-layered to single-layered conversions. for single-layered copying, u might as well leave everything on as u won't need additional space.

as for the various types of protections:
region = retail dvds and most dvd devices are set to a specific region of the world. if the region on the dvd and the region on the device don't match, the device will refuse to play the dvd, so if u have a region 1 player, and u try to play a region 2 dvd, u won't be able to do so. if either the dvd or device (or both) is region-free, u can play the dvd in the device. by stripping the region protection from the dvd, u can play the dvd on any player u want.
RCE = dvds that are RCE protected will refuse to play themselves in region-free devices.
PUOs = restrictions within the dvd itself, such as what u can skip, when u can return to the menu, etc.

as for media, u should see what u have access to, then go here and see if it's any good. i usually use dvd+rs made by ricoh.

are those options default with dvd decrypter? or do i need to turn them on? i guess they benefit everyone so why not have them on, ive been using dvd decrypter and just curious if i was doing it rite....again thx for all ur help, big learning experience tonite.

by default, dvd decrypter will remove region and RCE protections. u'll have to enable removal of PUO protections, although some would recommend against it, as u then have the ability to jump around to various parts of the dvd at times u're not supposed to.
