need help in dos

i have a virus infected file so im trying to delete it since norton can't access it; i figure deleting it from dos might work, but id ont know how to get to the file b/c the path has space in it

C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\VirusDefs\20030528.001\0000NAV~.TMP


is the file im trying to delete but i cant get there from c:\ ;i tried cd\program files n it wont work

please help

You cannot access the folder using LFN (Long File Names) because DOS only support short file names.
In this case, C:\Program Files will become:
C:\PROGRA~1\
Now try this command to see if it works for you:
del C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\SYMANT~1\VIRUSD~1\200305~1\0000NAV~.TMP

it doesnt work; it says
'AV~.TMP' is not recognized as an
operable program or batch file.

so i guess i must do a cd\ all the way to the inside folder and try to delete it

Hmmm. Did you type it as a whole line?
Or try this:
del C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\SYMANT~1\VIRUSD~1\200305~1\0000NA~1.TMP

did you not make a nortan rescue disk set that allows dos virus scanning !?

usually you make a set to around 5 floppys if i remember rightly !?

yes i copy and paste the whole line and it didnt work

also, when i tried to do a cd\ to browse to the subfolder, i got to

but when i tried cd\virusd~1 or cd\virusdefs\, it says invalid directory; i dont know why

Have you booted with a DOS disk and run Scandisk or Chkdsk? Could have cross-linked or lost clusters, making the folder unreadable...

I recommend keeping either a boot floppy set or a bootable CD with NAV on it to recover from things like this. Saved my butt a few times, ever since my first Brain Virus back in '91.

Is that a quarantined file?
Delete the whole damn Norton FOLDER! Just update the definitions again.

If you are stuck, you can try using LFN tools in DOS so you will be able to use LFN in DOS:

try real dos since if you managede to paste that in you must be using dos box in windows file could be used by windows

if so not sure if dos box would let you remove it

Win2000 DOS is not real dos- it's just commandline console which emulates the DOS commands.
Or you can use third party software to access+ delete the file: ERD Commander, O@O Blue Con, or NTFS-DOS. Not really needed, recovery console should work fine.
Another option is uninstalling Norton Antivirus (mind to remove the antivirus definitions by hand from the / common files dir), install the freeware home edition of Avast! 4 antivirus, and after installing order the program to do a full system scan at startup. This module loads before any Windows drivers are loaded, and the infected file will be spotted and deleted (the choice needs your input).
You may end up using that one instead of Norton, as many people did: very good antivirus and extremely speedy scanning. <

thanks scarecrow, i m on windows 2000; i def. will try that antivirus if it comes highly recommended; i have been using norton system works, but i really am not impressed with it; so many features and not all usable; plus, they make uninstalling them soooooo difficult; u can never get rid of all their components!!!!?

Viper: thx for the heads-up.
Ubamous: Not being impressed by the Norton stuff is natural, from the stuff you have put on I would pick up in a snip VET. (etrust is an inflated vet clone, not really needed).
But imho Avast!4 is equally good, faster and better- and I'm talking about the free version, not the paid pro one.
