Now That You Mention Scandisk.. How Can I View The Surface Of The HDD.. For Bad Sector's..

The XP Scandisk Dont Show It Beside's Running The Check..
Not sure if it's the same in XP, but in 98, you can set it in the options - Type of test - Thorough

If you don't use thorough, it only checks for structure errors - the full test including SURFACE is VERY, VERY SLOW!
Additional options allow write testing to be deselected (it lifts the data, write tests under it, and then rewrites the data) - I just hope it stores it somewhere in case of a power outage!

NB. If you have any form of boot sector write protection enabled, the surface test will trigger a warning, most likely twice - once when it write tests, and again when it rewrites the original data.

PS. Did it report any warnings in BIOS - if SMART is enabled in BIOS, it can sometimes give you advance warning that something is wrong.

You could have right-clicked on the drive letter, selected properties and then from Tools you could have Checked for Errors (check both boxed), rebooted, fixed the errors as well on startup.

If you are using FAT32 instead of NTFS, you will have more lost sectors if you turn the pc off instead of shutting down gracefully (or if it crashes).

So I Suggest Your Saying BAD SECTORS Appear When A Inproper Shutdown Dont Take Place..!

Would That Repair BAD SECTORS..!
