Member's Right To Delete Own Posts

it's a very good option we enjoy in this forum - if you make a mistake, you can delete yr post by yrself (i have not seen this great thing in any other forum that i am a member to). but, there is also one drawback to it (sometimes) – when a post is deleted, the following posts are gone too. So, we all have to be careful whether this fine feature infringes other's right to view / post.

for example, just the other day, i saw a post in the wrong section. i softly notified the person of the mistake + i submitted an alternative link for that program. in response, the person simply deleted the thread and posted a new one at the correct section – not even caring to send a courtesy pm to me. if you do something wrong and yr post gets deleted, crews of this forum always inform you of this cause. But, this person deleted my post due to his/her mistake. this not only has infringed my right, it affected other’s right too – as I gave an alternative link in that post. I do not know, if anyone has similar experience, but i was embarrassed.

similar problem can happen in editing. If you post something and others reply to it. It should be fixed that way. else, in case of argument / discussion, if you edit the original post, the replies can as well be obsolete.

all this editing / deleting depends upon a member and his/her attitude – we should always expect the best from anyone. yet, options like this can lead to such infringement and abuse.

so, i would suggest 3 things (just ideas, there can be technical difficulties) :

1. we should be courteous and be aware of other’s rights. If this point is properly followed the next 2 suggestions do not need to be mentioned.
2. posts / thread can’t be deleted (i mean, by members not mods), after a reply is posted.
3. likewise, a post can’t be edited after a reply is posted.

we have spotted this problem before with flame type posts being quickly edited /deleted and have discussed this so we are thinkin about this problem :)

also yah its a pain in the butt that if the original poster deletes the starting thread it removes all following posts unfortunatly !?

im sure admin and N.B. sitemaster here will also read this post and add any relevant details and no doubt this will come up again in the next meeting :)

hope this will not discourage you "bangla" we appreciate your help here and you did a good thing of mentioning quietly about the post to the poster its just a shame the poster did not see it this way and claimed glory over your new link :( but thats how ignorant some people are :( unfortunatly :(

anyhow "bangla" keep up the good work :)

Yeah :)
Thanks for your post mate ...
We keep this one in mind, I am just not sure if the board features something like this ..
So the user is able to delete the thread, but not anymore if others have replied ..
But will check that out and let you know asap ! :)

Yep Parrotman, I understand your woe.

Live & let live I say.

Of late there seems to be a number of members that like nothing better than attack the slightest error in a post which when you think about it is quite pathetic as nobody knows everything, and anybody that pretends to is an utter fool!

Computer software is nowhere near the most important thing in life, some members would do well to remember that. ;)

Laz, I agree with u . We all make mistakes.
Unfortunately some people just keep making the same ones so something has to be said.

Would you guys like some cheese and crackers to go with all this wine. LOL. I say that people who are arrogant enough to belittle someone for a mistake they make in a post should think back to their first really monumentous f**k-up. Personally, I think people like that should be banned.

i believe, none of you saw my said reply. h/ever, mild notification should not be good enough to delete an entire thread - specially with the POSTING IN WRONG FORUMS hanging on top of every forum. we are all mates here & i think, i don't have to be a mod to notify someone - i didn't blame him, my tone was something like HEY..... it wasn't like WHY DID YOU-. i am very aware that i'm not a mod here - i just feel the forums should be kept tidy as much as possible for the better interest of all the members. also, i do not know much of anything & i'm not an expert - but at least i can figure out where a thread should be posted. also, if a newbie with 3/4 posts make such mistakes, it is acceptable, but if someone with 200+ posts do such mistakes - i see no harm if he is notified even by a fellow user. anyway, it now seems, MISTAKES are OK and if you want to notify of the mistake, you should try to remember yr own mistake - even a question of banning has come handy. but that's OK, i am now feeling myself a goof here and it seems, it's not my place anymore. so, b4 getting banned, i bid you all FAREWELL.

p.s. thanks viper and n.b. for yr kind words & daveml for pointing out the fact that i was up to. i also thank, joripe, rasta, poko, svgusta, kugmo (so many good people here !) for the good times i had with you during my stay.

@ bangla

I was not having a go at you m8 btw. I was reffering to some members who chip in on threads and are being quite aggressive, I never, ever seen a post by you that wasn't anything other than polite & well mannered.

There's no need for you to leave the forum over something like this m8, we need good members like you to stay and make the difference. ;)

@ dave

Could not agree with you more m8.

Geez...Neither was I!

I was referring to edited posts, and reminders, and PM's and arguing.....

I think I'll go crawl into a hole.....

tried to leave home and friends behind - but i can tell you, this hurts. had to come back. thanks everybody for everything. cheers !
