I use hub labels, they just cover the center hub, Limited printing space, but never any playback problems. Neato and other companies make them.

We just write in the hub area - the clear plastic section away from the foil.

What about acrilic paints ?! I used that poster-paint stuff my lil' brother uses from kindergarten... it's the bomd for custom designs... then glaze it over with a clear-gloss paint and the stuff shouldn't come off...
