Mandrake 9.2 and LG CD-ROM destruction!

http://www.mandrakelinux.com/en/lgerrata.php3

Excerpts:
A problem has been discovered with certain LG-based CD-ROM drives and Mandrake Linux 9.2. The kernel that comes shipped with Mandrake Linux 9.2 and early updates would send a FLUSH_CACHE command to the drive which would make drive inoperable by overwriting its firmware. Unfortunately, many Dell computers (possibly others) come with these CD-ROM drives. Currently, it is not believed to affect DVD-ROM/R/RW drives and some CD-RW drives; but this all depends entirely upon the firmware on the device.

The addected drives were popular in DELL and some IBM and Compaq systems

Some old Sony CD-ROM's fried too. The included kernel in 9.2 "final" was a disaster under many aspects, and it's already replaced (via normal updates) by a new one, which is not perfect, but at least does not love to cook CD-ROM's...
Some other disasters in 9.2 have been fixed, some others still waiting... at least mandrakesoft is hardly trying to add some salt to your dull life, you have to admit that! :D
BTW I'm typing now from an fully upgraded Mandrake 9.2, and all my CD-ROM's still seem to be working... fingers crossed!

Using RedHat/Debian/GenToo/...

I'm also using Debian Sarge for hardcore jobs, but Mandrake 9.X is my main OS... How they did it? well, they are very capapble coders, i can assure you! :p
