i know this isnt an easy thing to do and its all about personal choice,but im looking for some recommendations for an external dvd rewriter that can be used with my laptop...i will be using it mostly for burning PS2 games rather than movies...can anybody help me narrow the field a little? id be very grateful for any help

I have been using the external version of the Sony Dru500a (DRX-500UL) with my laptop for more than a year with no problems or failures. Its purely a matter of preference as each person has had good and bad experiances with the same model of burner. However you do not need to confine yourself to prebuilt external burners. Simply choose a normal internal burner, buy an external 5.25", usb2 or firewire or combo usb2/firewire enclosure, install your internal burner in that enclosure - and you will have saved money and have the ability to choose from any number of burner models:)

Do you have usb2?If not,you can go for the LiteOn 411S or 451S.....cheap and reliable.

I really cannot recomend a good one,couse in a last 2 months im trying to decide which one i will buy??Couse every one got something strange??Buying a cd writer is so much easier,and they are all can do what i need..
Im almost fedup with dvd writers and didnt even buy it yet?? :( :mad: For games usually liteon and plextor are the goodones--as all people saying that;
Anyway as the guy posted above,i decided too when i buy it to buy regular internal one,and to buy that external case,you simply plug it in-put it in the """box"""==external enclosure and you are all set,you can bring it with you,whatever..wherever....And its really cheap... :) Example posted below :)

thanks for all the help lads...i do actually have an internal drive already...a pioneer dvr-106...so you think id be better off getting one of those external cases? are they all the same size and everything? if i go for an external one i'll probably go for a plextor or lite-on then...again,thanks a lot for your help

You can use your Pioneer with an external case without serious issues- I'd rather recommend a firewire case (if you have an IEE1394 controller on your puter), as it stresses the CPU way less than USB2.

I'd rather go with Combo (USB2.0 & Firewire) 5.25" enclosure. Why? becuz some old computers (especially lap-top) do not have Firewire port or even USB2.0 and in that case you can use USB2.0 to connect and also USB2.0 is complatible with USB1.1. I say that becuz I have one myself and going to buy another one. I'm not how expensive in Europe otherswise I'd choose USB2.0 only for the same reason. I have no problem can burn @ 8x (8-9 mins for 4.3 GBS) on both connections as well.

For the case of burner, I have Lite-On 411s @ 811s and Pionneer A06/106D. If you are a computer person and want to do a lot of things with your computer part, then I'd recommend Lite-On. Lite-on communities are huge and there will be so many F/W, update and even hacks for you to play with, also Lite-on can handle protection discs and give a good quality burning disc as well. BUT if you just a end-user and don't want to worry anything else then go with Pionner A06 just for reliability only (install it and forget it some like that :) ).
