I just got a Lite-on 411s and I have tried to burn DVD-R disc using Nero and RecordnowDX and both of them freeze up before it starts to even burn. I have to restart the computer to get out of the program. Has anyone else heard of this problem before?

Thank you

The drive works because I have brought it over to a friends computer and it worked fine.

I am running a 750mhz AMD, with windows XP.

I am able to burn CDRs just fine, but it freezes when trying to burn a DVDR

Giga-byte MOBO?

By any chance is your mobo a Gigabyte?
If so try updating your bios to the last version for your mobo.
A friend has same problem as you 7 series I thing Gigabyte mobo? they did the works even went out and bought a new DVD BURNER MSI and that worked after they had installed in PC but the L/On 411 would not. It was not untill they did a bois updated they managed to get the thing to work on both Nero 5 series and Stomp.RNM4.5. They had the secound released firmware installed from factory when new which ever version that my be if that helps...

I have a FIC SD11 motherboard right now. I checked for any bios updates and there hasnt been any for 4 years, on the FIC website at least.

Do you have XP burning junk (IMAPI CD-Burning COM Service) turned off? Also can you post a log file fron Nero?

I can not get a log file from nero because it freezes and the only way to do anything on my computer is to restat it.

I am not sure what you mean by "Do you have XP burning junk (IMAPI CD-Burning COM Service) turned off"

I follwed the steps in the beginners guide and set everything up like suggested

I don't which guide you looked at but I took this from RASTABT tips:
"IMAPI CD Burning.

Now if you’re using Windows XP it has a built-in (useless) burning engine. That's our view on matter.

It is advisable to disable this, as it can create problems for you. Go to Control Panel>administrative tools>services shortcut.Scroll through the list to"IMAPI CD Burning".Disable it. Or you can use this route Go to My Computer once there go to your Burner and right click it and go to Properties see picture 5."
Also I don't know if you know it but you don't get to the log file from the program its in the director and its called Nero History log file .
I just say this cause it could be a good way to find out what causes your problem.:)
C:\Program Files\Ahead\Nero
Also if its their and you post it leave out your serial number.

What am I looking for in the nero directory?
Its called NeroHistory.log. It should look something like this, I shorten mine but you should get the idea.

Unfortunately I have no log file.

I am really stuck on what the problem can be. Would it matter that my HD is FAT32? I tried to burn just 2 gigs worth of data on disc and it still doesnt let me, so I figured that wasnt the problem.

How about you post the info from Nero Info Tool? Open NIT and them hit save and post what it comes up with. :)

I went looking for some links, and didn't like what I found... the SD11 would seem to be a "rush job" (and the AMD751 / VIA686A is a pain). I KNOW the limitations of a full AMD750 lineup (I have one). Not sure if this mixed chipset suffers from the "VIA bug", that was problematic with regards to IDE corruption, and Soundblaster cards were also a factor - it's an old, bad memory - and I have a feeling the site with the best info on it has long since died.

According to this site
http://www.pcstats.com/articleview.cfm?articleID=966
With the AMD/VIA mixed chipset, you install the VIA 4 in 1, MINUS the AGP driver, and install just the AGP driver from AMD. No idea if it's relevant, but it's about all I turned up.

PS. Back in the Win98 reviews, it seems the Win98 (Microsoft) IDE drivers were doing better than the VIA, but that would have been an old revision.

What driver and version is the IDE running - Infotool will probably report that as well

From looking at different forums I have found others with similar problems using the VIA chipset and DVD burners especially the Liteon. I might try to use a IDE card what do you guys think about that? Would it allow me to bi-pass the VIA chipset on the MOBO?

Many IDE cards are unusable with writers!

The usual driver shuffle is:
If using the original Microsoft drivers, try the VIA, if using VIA drivers, try uninstalling them or using a different version.

http://www.viaarena.com/?PageID=342
There are also two kinds of driver for VIA - it appears the default 4 in 1 uses the filter driver for everything but NT, though the miniport seems to have more tweaks (other than that "watch special ATA/ATAPI command to keep system stability").

It's also as well to try to put the writer on scendary master - many drives work better at this position, than as slave.
