lets get this straight, what the best antivirus proggy?

im just having a new beginning with xp right now and i dont know a thing about AVs. usually i just go with the popular ones like norton or mcafees. but now, there are a lot. i goto wzor.net and see vexira AV and sophos AV and f-prot. i just wanna know your opinions on AV proggies and what you are using right now and if you can recommend it. thanks!:D

and btw, i heard f-secure was good, and it is one of the expensive ones. a little bit more expensive than the other AVs at least.

Norton Anti-Virus 2003 I use .. haven't gotten a virus eva since I started using Norton Anti-virus 2001 .. best there I reckon.. worx sweet in XP

ok, tnks, i think ill try norton. and AVG. i was wondering if sophos or f-prot was any good.
If you had used the search function, you would have seen many threads on anti-virus. F_secure is excellent as well as Kasperski.

As for the best, I'm pretty sure the best one would change from month to month but you would not necessarily want to change sw from month to month as the difference would be minimal when using the top ranked sw.

The consensus is that Norton's sw, while not necessarily being bad, is bloated and resource hungry when compared to other solutions.

Sometimes, the answer will also depend on your email sw. For instance Kasperski handles The Bat! particularly well when compared to others.

As you can see the answer as to the best av sw is not easy as it has many facets one of which may also be your OS platform as some perform much better under one platform than the other.

Good luck!

Im with poko, ive been using kapperski which has been very good, but have just started using NOD32.

At the moment, very impressed. May have to buy though after the trial has ended.

I am fast becoming fed up with Norton, it is so easy to nuke something like Outlook and Norton will not budge, thankfully I have ' dll authentication ' active with my Sygate Firewall --> LIFESAVER.

hi, rolz9

I have try many AVs and I'm using eTrust EZ Antivirus products for quite a while now. I'm pretty happy with it, never had a virus problem, and is lean on resources. I've seen somewere, but don't remember were, cracks or keygens for it (I'm paying for it, that's how much I like it)

Of course there are some good threads on antivirus in this forum you may want to check if you haven't yet (I did recently and will stay with EZ)

PS: if you are having a new beguinning why don't you do yourself a favor and upgrade to Win2K instead of XP?

and beware of IDE wiring !!

AVG is a super great anti virus software and it's free!

they're always on top of viruses out there and usually one of the first one's to update.
They never fail!

NOD32 best by miles :)

@rolz - thx for the mention to NOD on wzor but the problem isn't getting the S/W it's updating it. Once you install you must supply User ID and password to update it and Eset change them too bloody often :(

As Poko said - buy it or rebuild every 20 days (as I do) ;)

NOD32 is I think one of the best ranked, but if you are not a registered user the problem with be upgrading definitions, etc. F-Secure is fast and one thing I like it's that virus definitions are updated very often, and sometimes daily. It works great under xp. The one I don't like is it doesn't scann email, but it supposed that if real time monitor works fine this wouldn't be a problem.

thanks all for sharing. i currently have nod32 with 1019 update. its just really a hassle for me without automatic updates. guess eset thought well about that. and i heard kaspersky AVP was really good. its even winning the race over at wzor right now. NAV slightly behind. maybe i'll stick with AVP for a while after i dload it. thanks all.

IMHO Anti Virus software is like a condom. The best one is the one you are most likely to use and know how to apply correctly. I have used a lot of different ones (before you ask, I am referring to AV programs here.) I have never had a virus that wasn't the result of my own carelessness. I came back from a long trip and opened my email before updating the defs. I trusted what I thought was a factory Win98SE disk. It turned out to be a knock-off with a virus on it. Another time I bought a sealed CD at the computer show and it had a virus in it. Had the AV program set to not scan floppies on access and stuck a boot floppy I had just used to try to boot into another machine that turned out to be virused-out.. You get the idea. Get one that you like and can figure out how to use and then use it. The computer world is full of people who are full of opinions. You will never get us to agree on what the "best" anything is. At least that's my opinion.

norton, i have used others in the past and even though it is a lil bloated and hungry i have found it the best by far,the updates are invaluable to any AV software and i get plenty off norton every month, nod is very good but you have to keep installing it which is a monumental pain in the butt, i like to install a proggy then leave it to do its thing.
norton has caught some very descreet viruses for me in the past so thats why im sticking with the " 'ol faithful" hehe :)

me too are using it (etrust ez armer)

in truth these types of debates would never end. Mine is better than yours & so on.

Some have made some good points (condom lol)... get one you like & has good/often updates. Now also get descent firewall, now also get trojan cleaner, now also get port bouncers or port immitators, etc... etc... .

List goes on & on on how secure to do things.
Not one anti-virus or firewall will give you 100% protection. Most often people who are paranoid or really need super protection, have 2 or 3 or more of each running (or one main one & the others to double check with manually).
Use some common sense when you download things & surf & most of the time you will have nothing to worry about.

Guess that's all I have to say on this topic for now.
Good luck to all of you!

PS

The A/V from Gladiator looks promising. I'll be testing it shortly to see how it works (but at least they are looking for our input to help improve things).
