Is it possible to make ISO files from unrared files? Have a program and want to update it, but it requires the "original cd" to be in the cd rom while it updates. How do you unrar the files and make an image file from them to trick the program to think the "original" is install in the cd rom ?

depends on what software you have available to use
the way i do it - i am sure there are better ways - and hopefully someone will post an easier way.
1. fire up nero and add the files you want to make into an iso
you can go through all the sreens and add the fancy stuff like disc name and date and all that but, i don't
2. burn the data - on the screen will be make image - check it and nero will make you an .nrg file (not positive on the extension never really paid attention)
3. i use cdmage and import the file
4. in cdmage use save as and it will give you output for bin cue file for cdrwin...tell it ok and name it or leave it the same
5. isobuster or you favorite iso converter file and tell it to convert your bin cue to iso
6. you should have an iso file that you can burn with your favorite software.
i have not done it for a while so things may not be exact...but it should help you as a 'guide'
OR better yet wait till someone with more practice at it to show you a better/faster way

There isn't any trick involved, just use the CDR program supports the ISO format you want to burn, make sure the CDR program works with your burner and your system, then select the correct option (to burn CD Image you need to burn as CD Image *not* DATA, Audio, Video etc.) then you should work.
CD Image is the best you can get from internet, besides some games have copy protection that CDR program can't create the true image, most should work just like the original CD. If you burnt an ISO file downloaded from internet which asks for "original CD" then you may need to spend little time to read the .NFO which often has all the answer you need to know, to get the program to work.
