Is the sony crx195a any good ?

I currently have a Samsung 24x CDRW which is absolutely useless when it comes to backing up safedisc 2 & securom discs...

I've read quite a few reports that the sony crx195a is a fairly decent cd-writer which is apparently a lite-on drive!

Guys, did I make the right decision ?

Keep in mind that Plextor pricing is far too expensive and Lite-on drives aren't available where I am !!!

Thanks!

I would suggest you go to cdrinfo.com to check and see what is the best drive you can get for your money...they do some very comprehensive tests on the drives.

Here is the link for their past review section....you may see a better drive that you can get in your area.

Hope this helps:)

There's a 195A, a 195E1 (which appears to be the model reviewed as an "A"??) - Liteon based and gets a correct EFM rating in ELBY's tables.

Some report getting a 195E4 in the box, and that only scores "almost" correct.

If you want a Liteon (so far a pretty good bet for Clone/Alcohol/Diskjuggler) then BUY a Liteon - it's the only way to be sure.

The upcoming Aopen 52x drive, in a surprise move for a RICOH chipset drive, also appears to be SD2 capable, even SD2 2.80 (using Diskjuggler, not Clone, as Clone is not up to it yet!)

Caution, firmware is not final, so it's possible they may deliberately stuff up this capability in the final - NO other Aopen or RICOH drives do any better than "almost" correct

thanks for the help...

it seems i have a sony crx195E1 which is packaged as crx195a1 - i think i made the right decision because it's a helluva lot better than my samsung 24x cdwriter!

i've used alcohol 120% and it seems to work with my safedisc & safedisc 2 games.

the only disc i can't backup is "No one lives forever 2" - i'm not quite sure which protection it has and what software to use to back it up!

i bought a 195e4 (packaged as an a1), and replaced it 3 times before finally kicking it out and settling for an asus 4012. no problems -- yet.

PS. With a 195E1, you may find this site interesting

Convert to Liteon, and/or Overclock to 48x.
*** Invalidate warranty, may also invalidate bundle software (it would if it was NERO, but the Sony is supplied with B's Gold) ***
Mount Rainier imoportant to you - no problem.

Question is, though, I coud understand people being glad to find Plextors re-branded, but is this re-branded Liteon any cheaper than the real thing????

Sony have gone from BEING re-branded (common in HP's, though not certain) to doing the re-branding - what a come down!

Thanks again. But I can honestly say that I made the right decision to buy this drive !

Not only can I backup safedisc 2 discs, but I can also backup Securom 4.x discs!
