Inkjet cartridges

Totally fed up with the ultimate scam - replacement cartridges. How much do these things cost to produce - 50p? resell them for £50!!!

I need some honest advice on the quality of budget replacement cartridges. I'm most likely going to buy an Epson 890.

Are these cartridges close to the quality of the originals? I will be printing photo images on decent paper.

Thanks

InkSaver™ ?

Bode,

I agree with you about the outrageous prices of Inkjet cartridges.

I am unaware of your brand of printer but there is a software program call InkSaver that reduces the ink usage of your inkjet cartridges. This software program might be able to be used with your printer.

Their web site is h**p://www.inksaver.com and this might be something you might consider checking out.

Regards.

@bode, i have an 890 and i use print-rite cartrages, they cost me £10 for one black and one colour from any decent computer show m8. the only thing i notice any different is that they smell different to the originals, i print photos,cd covers and labels with mine and i use either photo or matt paper and mine come out cristal clear.

iv just got rid of a cannon multifax & printer ect.the inks were £17 & £26 each.but only held 5mls.i brought the ink refills & just kept on using them.was only doing cd covers & if left to long would dry out.
they wernt any good for photoes as the ink seems quite runny.
the trouble was the cannon wernt compatable with xp.
iv now got the hp 950 series.its usb so it works fine with xp.
these inks are £30 & £ 38 each.but hold 30mls.its great pics & has the plugins to take camera & sony cards ect.
the ink saver isnt compatable with this, but i wouldnt think it would be of much use with photos,as your bound to lose some of the quality.iv got to get some inks yet & these arnt realy fillable.
im hoping to get round it as usaly im only doing covers.
then i will just keep swaping them over.
another point is would the inksaver be any good as printers are very unpredictable when installing any way.

I'm currently using a Lexmark Z52 but can't get the compatable cartridges - continually out of stock, so that's why I'm going to get an Epson 890. The replacement cartridges can be bought for £40 cheaper.

I read the thread on ink saver last night, but it doesn't seem suitable for photo quality images, but I'll have a further look into it.

@ midnightangel, that answers everything - thanks everyone.

I have a Lexmark Z53 and had a Z51 before that. I now refill my cartridges. The one important thing to remember is to not wait untill it is completely empty... Also use it like once a week to keep the holes clear. I spent about two months without printing with my Z51 and when I came to print, the holes were plugged and could not get them to clear and went to buy a new printer instead. It seems cheaper to buy a brand new printer with a full warranty and better newer specs than buying two new cartridges!:(

Update:

I discovered a UK chainstore (Cartridge World) which will refill my Lexmark cartridges with Lexmark Ink. As you mentioned, you need to keep your cartridges in very good condition.

The chips are designed to burn out, but you can use them 5-6 times. Don't let your ink run out as this will damage the cartridge if you try to print.

They also fill a particular ink if you should run out of just one of them- a lifesaver!

Donations for old cartridges welcome :)

Epson 810. Had loads of bother when first used compats. Missed "recharging" the cartridge. But after wasting best part of 2 compats, it suddenly clicked. And quality is excellent, little (if any) difference. Of course depends quality of paper you're using, I find myuself that you need to clean the print heads after re-charging about 20 times (at least) before checking with a test print, but thereafter the prints should be excellent.

I refill the color for my Lexmark but the black clogs after a few hours. I bought ink kits CHEAP (on sale locally) and still have 2 full color/black ones. I broke even already w/color. VERY upset black does not work right. MUST be different ink as for envelopes?

I could use 4-5 cartridges to print manuals out.
