DWU-14A to DRU-510A

Personally I wouldn't recommend flashing DWU-14A to DRU-510A. I bought the former form Ebuyer and had problems writing DVD Video to Orange Bulkpaq media at 2x or 4x using Nero Ultra 6. I upgraded the writer to DRU-510A to try and solve the problem as described in the Ebuyer reviews section for the DWU-14A. Nero recognises the drive as being a DRU-510A but it only gives the option to write at 2.4x now rather than 1,2,3,and 4x as before.

Anyone any ideas why my DVDs aren't burning? Here's the problem:
Specs-
XP Pro
Albatron KX400+/Athlon 2000/512MB DDR 333/

I have the drive configured as Master on the Secondary IDE channel and the HDD set to Master on the primary. There is also a second HDD set to Slave on the Primary IDE channel that I use for dual booting and a further CDROM set to Slave on the Secondary IDE channel. The device manager says that Primary IDE channel is at UDMA mode 6 and the Secondary is UDMA mode 2.

I use DVD decrypter 3.1.9.0 to backup the movies from DVD to HDD. Then use DVDFab 0.1.7.0 or DVD Shrink 2.3 to either split the whole DVD into two discs or compress just the movie. Finally use Nero Ultra 6 to burn the DVD. I disable screen saver when burning.

Result when using the DWU-14A was movies that mostly played in the stand alone player and PC but had read errors at some point causing it to stutter. Used DVD XCOPY Rescue to perform read test on all the backups and found that they all had read errors - generally a combination of both hardware and software errors.

Sorry about the long post but any ideas as I'm rapidly accumulating more costers than I have glasses!

Just use the right media for the Sony (Ritek G4 or Sony) and you should have no problems... Orange Bulkpaq would make very nice coasters indeed if they were really orange- but alas, they aren't...

I'm a bit reluctant to spend money on different/more expensive media as many peeps on Ebuyer say that Orange Bulkpak works with the Sony. I'm inclined to agree with them as the discs play fine for usually 99% of the movie on my stand alone player. It's only a tiny proportion of the film where there appear to be (soft)read errors. I think there could be a problem with buffer underrun as when I've used the Determin Maxium Speed for burning DVDs using Nero 6 it fluctuates between 2.9 and 3x. Does this seem slow for my system configuration or am I expecting too much? The DVD and source HDD are both on Master on seperate IDE channels. Although, having said this there are no Buffer Underrun errors reported on Nero.
As I mentioned previously I've used DVDXCopy Rescue to measure the "Readability" of the (faulty)copied DVDs. All of them threw up some "Soft" and/or "Hard" errors. I though that this indicated why there were slight problems playing the DVDs. However, using the same test on original DVDs produced similar results and obviously they play fine. Are there any other apps out there that can accurately measure the Readabilty of a DVD as it's a real pain to watch each copied DVD in it's entirity to see if it's worked ok.

Again, sorry for the length of the post-just a newbee to this stuff.

Burn to cheap media by all means ><><><>< BUT that means the chances of the burned DVDR playing on most standalones is zilch

Good media ( I go with the ritek dye) plays on just about any player.;):)
