How to disable the DMA ?

Reason I ask is A) I dont have a friggin' clue what it is, B) I dont know WHERE it is, and C) I dont know how to disable it if I got there !

Reason I ask is, I have just now ordered a Sony 4x* (DWU-10A) and it tells me that a firmware upgrade makes it a 500, and another feller says, "Yes, it sure does but beware, disable the DMA first" So I ask you gents to gimme a hand here, before it gets here Thursday....

Phil I have a Sony DW-U10a

& U DO NOT NEED to flash it to a 500 & no matter what the so called experts tell U it would be a backwards step.

I am well pleased with mine it burns all the 4 speed DVDR's i have thrown at it <> BUT I prefer Ritek dyes they work very well!

This sounds good. But it says that the firmware is needed to write at 4x - is this not so ?

Thanks, ol' chap. I'll hold fire on this at first, and check out Poachers advice first. But cheers indeed. ;)

Mine has the firmware it came with

My golden rule is <> if it works dont change it especially firmware UNLESS U get an improvement in performance

Dont tell me - Win2k ?

If W98 - it and ME hated yours truly with a venom. Had loads of bother with both.

But XP ? I only get bother if I put an ant-virus on, and then Collapso ! If not immediately, then before too long. Only F-Prot has run without a problem. But I dont have it no more, and I'm damned if I'll put me hand in me pocket again after forking out for zillions of things in the last few days. (Only SLIGHTLY exaggerrating, believe me !)

Yeah mate - but does it write 4x ? I gather after doing a little sniffing around that it DOES write DVD-R at 4x but not DVD+R. Is that so ?

@phil i know only what i have learned here bud DVD-R seems to be the VHS of the millenium and DVD+R is the BETAMAX :)

simple as that :)

and other reading tells me that DVD+R is also incompatible with a lot of players :(

all this even despite the fact that BILL GATES has invested a lot into the DVD+R format its gunna go the same way as BETAMAX by sheer voulme and costs :)

No idea never burnt a + & Dont intend to in the forseeable future!
So it does write at 4x for DVD-R then ? (Blimey ! Its like the old "Take your pick" "yes and no" starter when I was but a pre-school kid trying to get Poacher to say "Yep, it writes at 4x without the upgrade !") :D :D :D

Check a list of changes which new firmware brings.....If it doesent bring something new....or fix some bug which exist on your pc--and you`re aware of that bug.....AS poacher said..dont change if its works......
Also.....Disable a dma is never a good idea.........for xp
couse in pio mode.....Your drives will be so slow....
