How can I backup a DVD in the highest Quality ??

I'm kinda new at this and have read the tutorials by chicken man, which was very helpful, but I'd like to know how to make the best quality backup DVD possible. My specs
Dual PIII 1000
512 meg ram
80 gig Ultra 100 7200rpm
Creative PC-DVD Encore 8X with Dxr3 decoder
Plextor 12/10/32 CDRW
Running WinXP Pro

Sony DVP-NS700P Hook up to a complete surround system with DTS audio receiver.

The quality of video and sound is everything to me, and was wondering if there is a way to make a perfect backup.

If you intend to watch the converted DVD's on your Sony, the best quality for pic and sound would be SVCD.

Try it, you can get some fantastic results.

I made the SVCD using the tutorial you have chickenman, everything went great, but when I tried to play it in my sony, it said unable to play this cd :0(
I used memorex CDR 80 minute disks to burn the .mpg files to.
They will play on my creative DVD with powerDVD, but the quality don't seem to be very good. I see a lot of blocked edges fading in and out. Any ideals on why the sony wont play them ??

SONY DVD's unfortunately are renownded for not reading CDR's, try burning to a CDRW instead.

As for blockyness, lift the data rate up to 2600. If its grey out, then load the UNLOCK template after you load the SVCD template in.

i have a sony dvp-725d

according to h**p://www.vcdhelp.com/dvdlist/441.html it can't play svcd's but it plays xvcd at 2000kbits.
can anybody tell me what exactly is xvcd and how to make a one?

i also found on this page following:

"I've found a way to play SVCD videos in my Sony. Using TMPGEnc, I 'demux' the video (*.m2v). Then 'mux' again, but choose the option "Non Standard VCD" (instead of MPEG-2).
Burn the resulting mpg with Nero 5.x as VCD (non standard, again).
Sony DVP-S725D will play it perfectly, with mpeg2 quality.
For CD-R I use Princo and for CD-RW any brand is ok."

does it make sense to you? my goal is to get to work on my sony the best possible quality for backuped dvd's.

last but not least. the ppl saying that princo silver-silver cd-r's can be played in 725d. i don't have a cd-rw writer so i have to decide either to by a cd-rw or test this prico cd-rs. therefore i'd like to ask you whether some of you knows a source for that cd-r's in germany.

I have read the same discussion and would suggest it is only a solution to people that have a DVD player that WILL NOT play SVCD, like yours, and will only play VCD's. But the CD's will be absolutely non-standard in every way. They may work in your DVD player but if you intend to trade/lend them to others, dont expect them to play them.

XVCD is eXtended VCD. They are made exacly as a VCD (following my Tutorials) however, you increase the data rate up from the standard VCD rate of 1150 bps to 2000 (or even to 3000 if your DVD player can handle it) The picture quality is a lot better than std VCD but the file increases in size and so does the CD count. It is also a non-standard format (not as bad as the one mentioned above) and may not play on all DVD Players.

Princo's are also sold under a lot of different names as well, such as MagMedia. The recording surface has a different colour than most other CDR's. Its a pale Blue with a slight Green tint. So check out the dye colour and try a few other brands. Sony DVD's are very fussy when it comes to CDR's.

SamSung Player

Sony is no doubt (one of) the best audio/video mfgr. But its DVD/CD/VCD players are less forgiving to disc like CD-R and CD-RW.

My friend bought a Samsung, its player anything, everything. And it plays MP3 directly too.

I would consider SamSung my next best choice.
