thanks for replies i went to the link and found HA 432} RONIN P701 DVD/MP3/VCD/CDR/DVD-R/CD player - as i said i dont know
whats good or bad so i take it it must be brill for the dosh ie functions etc i cant find the yamad one though are both machines more or less the same

iv had a look i suppose the Umax DVD-2100 looks better than the
Ronin P703 one review said this -Firstly picture quality is no better whatsoever than my PC with Geforce2 MX and TV-out (with TVTool) for DVD playback. I mean it's perfectly okay but I was expecting it to be better! It *was* region free and played my R1 discs, but very jerky unless you use NTSC mode, when the picture looks too red and unfocused. My PC can play R1 discs on my TV in PAL mode with no jerkiness or audio sync problems. Worst of all, the aspect ratio selector does not work properly; to watch 2.35:1 films on a 4:3 TV, you must choose between a tiny slit letterbox, or the picture is STRETCHED vertically so the aspect ratio is all wrong (people have oblong faces etc). You CAN zoom in instead, which gives a better picture with smaller black bars, but you have to put up with '2X' (for 2x zoom) displayed on screen all the time. So for me this player is great, for 1.85:1 R2 discs. Only. Otherwise my PC is better - dont know what to make of that review as iv have not tried one i guess more views would help pros and cons of the machine i do like the look of it and the price

this is a review of the yamada >

Scart lead, remote control and composite video lead included

Okay, so it's packed full of great features and all that, but the first thing that will strike you about the Yamada DVD-2100 Multi- Region DVD player is how hot-damn sexy it is. Careful, don't touch it - it's hot stuff!

Once you've got over its dazzling good looks, the Yamada packs some serious punch under that gorgeous bonnet. It's a multi- region DVD player, which means it'll play DVDs from around the world - get all the latest movies from the States months before they're released over here! It also plays RCE encrypted discs, meaning no Hollywood bigwigs can interrupt your enjoyment! The Yamada has a built-in Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound decoder, meaning if you connect it up to an appropriate system, your movies will sound bigger and better than ever before! Sound is something often overlooked by DVD buyers, but with the Yamada, you can't fail to notice its brilliance!

The Yamada isn't restricted to just DVD movies either. If you've got a disc full of MP3 tunes you want to spin, the Yamada will play them, likewise any regular audio CDs or CD-R/RW discs - remember, this is where that 5.1 surround sound comes in extra useful! You can even watch V-CDs and CDs with JPEG images burned on them - perfect for those holiday snaps! Also features connectors for RGB SCART, S-Video and composite video out, Output digital bitstream audio via coaxial or optical ports, plus analogue left and right for stereo output. A fantastic DVD player!

Umax / Yamada DVD-2100

Umax DVD (Also sold under the Yamada Brand name) players have achieved near cult status among video buffs for their features -- much to the annoyance of the recording industry. Umax's entry level set-top player, the DVD-2100 Home DVD player /Photo System, in my opinion lives up to this standard.

First Impressions - Out of the box.
Sleek, tasteful and classy all words that come to mind when you first look at the Umax DVD-2100. Although this is a budget DVD player it looks and feels like an expensive Sony or Pioneer DVD player that costs twice as much as this beauty.

Setting Up – You even get a Manual.
In my time I have reviewed a few DVD players and the most annoying thing about budget DVD players is the lack of manual or the Manual arrives in “taiwaneese English”. The manual that arrived with this DVD player was well laid out with plenty of diagrams and descriptions on the various features of the player.

At the Movies - Watching a DVD
The picture was razor sharp and crisp in fact it was without a doubt better than the two other DVD players I have reviewed for DVD Recordable. I wont go into the tech spec of the DVD player please refer to the bottom of this article for that.

Multimedia dexterity
It goes without saying that the Umax plays movies recorded onto DVD-R flawlessly. The feature that impressed me was in addition to this the Umax DVD-2100 offers good playback quality and support for a variety of audio and video CDs. I was pleasantly surprised to find that the DVD- 2100 supported MP3 audio discs burned to CD-RW media. I have seen CD-RW media confuse other set-top players during playback. The 2100 was able to decode our constant and variable bit rate MP3 files with ease.

Summary:
As entry-level DVD player , the Umax DVD-2100 looks good, infact looks expensive, and proves to be a solid performer with a good set of features you wouldn’t expect to find in a DVD player in this price range. A feature that was important for my girlfriend was that she could view our collection of Kodak Photo cds on this DVD Player.(Bonus that should keep he busy this ChristmasIf you are looking for a DVD player buy this one.
After reviewing this I would have to rate this Dvd player higher than other entry level players I have reviewed for this site

I bought Daewoo 5800 and 5900's on e-bay for about $80-90 that are 100-240VAC auto-switching, PAL/NTSC, Region/RCE free. Plays all region disks.

Stand-alone Desktop DVD Player ?

@ fender62,

Suggest visiting DVD R Help (http://www.dvdrhelp.com/) and then searching under “DVD Players” and “DVD Hacks”. You will find an enormous amount of stand-alone desktop DVD players and information on what formats these players support.

You are not very specific in what features you are looking for in your “home dvd player”. What do you intend to play in your “home dvd player”? Do you intent to back up your DVD’s using a computer CD-R/W in the VCD and/or SVCD format ? Do you plan to back up your DVD’s using a computer DVD recorder in the DVD (-) minus or DVD (+) plus format.

By visiting DVD R Help (http://www.dvdrhelp.com/) and searching under “DVD Players” you will be able to obtain the particulars on various stand-alone desktop DVD players and make an intelligent decision on which stand-alone desktop DVD players meets your needs.

Coaster

(Out of stock, not sure if they WILL get any more in) - apparently Multi-regionable, there may even be a slip IN THE BOX with the remote code for it.

See also CARPETBAGGER.COM - (another "no guest" forum).
Under "Freebies" or "Discounts", you may find that you can get a DVD player "free with", or as a "first order bonus", or by using a first order discount. This IS a predominantly UK based forum, though not exclusively.

And another Discount site - always worth looking for Dixons/Currys discount codes if you intend shopping online there!

cheers viper for advise i like the look of the yamada drive
although there isnt a place where i live to try it out sadly
i read someone said the yamadas sound output wasnt to good

If U want a player that does it all the Ronin & or the yamada will or go to a puter fair the ones sold there will play all (or they wouldnt get any buyers)

U must realise however the expensive big name players do playback DVD with better quality but not so U can really tell or worry about it

For good audiosound from dvd--YOU MUST have a good audiosystem....For example, even my cheapo apex dvd--which i got it free(bought tv--dvd was gift--included)sound great with my external dd decoder in a 5.1 setup with a dd movie......If your home theatar is good and connected ok(didital audio output..,or slt..)every new generation dvd should be ok!!!!
