Hard Disk Controllers

Try the trouble shooters approach disconnect all drives apart from the main boot hard drive ..

Then boot up with the main drive into windows and then close down add a cdrom/cdrw to that cable and boot up and see if that is recognized if it is then shut down and add another hard drive and boot up check that its recognized then shut down add the next device /cdrom/hard drive and boot up ....check each drive and rom in turn in this method and possibly eliminate a faulty drive /cable do this with both cables and all devices and see if they all work both individually and as part of a complete system :)

another idea to check if the problem is hardware related or OS/driver related would be installing W2k or XP; if you don't own it, do it just for testing purposes;

SUCCESS!!!
I tried connecting only the h/drive with a brand new cable and still
I was still only seeing 12gig after fdisk & format, although the bios
and when booting up showed the full 82gig.

Eventually I used partition magic to do the lot and it worked great
although It only seen 78gig,I know you lose some of the hard disk size
when partitioning but this was just a straight format using PM to create
the primary dos and make it active,

Proceeded to load windows and after it had completed it's scan it came
back with the result no problems on C or D??
Anyway carried on with the install , it went fine and after it finished
there was only one h/drive and cdroms were recognised no prob,
and system is running great.

on hindsight I think that there was a prob with the other m/board but
I haven't a clue as to how after fdisk format and then the same with PM
fdisk could show only 12 gig
and windows could pick up a non existing partition.

Nope,
82gig minus 64gig =18gig not 12

What was happening was that fdisk was reporting just over 12gig
which was the exact same size as the first partition on the
old h/drive which had been removed,

Like I said I've never seen anything like it and the guy I asked at
the pc shop didn't have a clue either,
thankfully his idea to use PM worked .
