hanging xp

i have this problem with xp . when it has booted up
it seems to hang there on the desktop for about 5 mins before i can do anything , anyone know why this s ?

Sorry Bubba, but you'll have to throw down some details of your system and how you've installed it. You could contrive it as a little story with a timeless confrontation between good and evil and a Via-based motherboard.

Probably there is a service of yours that hangs and needs some time to load. When PC is loading try to open as fast as possible MSCONFIG and look under services which ones are still loading and eating your ressources. If not necessary these can then be deactivated.
I had this problems many times under XP after every new installation.

Good luck

cheers , i will check this out ...
and yes mr bond i do have a via chipset , jet v333u mainboard
open to suggestions about a decent m/b

Change your settings on your Anti-Virus software to not scan the boot sector or your MBR. Particularlly a problem with Norton Anti-Virus 2003 PRO. Adds about 120 seconds to the boot time.

interesting

I certainly didn't know that. Currently, I use Norton's AV 2002, but have been considering upgrading to 2003. Then I might have this problem and I would have been wondering "what tha hell?".

Good info, thanks.

I can tell you about a recent experience of mine that sounded similar to yours. I had networked my computer to another via a crossover cable and for some reason, a configuration detail I'm sure, it caused a LOOONG load up after the desktop became visible. It's like I was viewing my deskop, but I couldn't do anything as the resources were busy doing the detection of the other computer and assigning all the things that needed be assigned to both computers (i had them each hooked to a router as well as directly to each other).

So if you are not network-savvy and have recently networked your computers, assuming you have more than one, this could possibly be the cause. I had no idea what the hell I was doing with mine; otherwise, I could have adjusted the configuration to boot up my main computer at a more reasonable pace.

Ive only had xp pro installed for a few days after formatting the hd before installing. Ive had no end of problem with it hanging when im using any programme. I was wondering tho if it could have anything to do with my internet connection as i have 2 lan connections 1. the usb port connectiong my broadband modem & 2.the surf card as well.

I think your answering your own question. Why not disconnect your modem and lan conections and see if you still have the problem ! If no problem re-connect one at a time.If still a problem let us know.
