fujifilm camera

hi all...
i'm not sure if this is the right place but i can't see any other place for this question....my prob is this
i have a digi camera [fujifilm MX-1200] it has a serial connector to my puter [winxp prof.]....
i'm upgrading and the new board doesn't have a serial connector for the camera....fuji have informed me that i can't use a ub2 connector for it...but being the kind of person i am, i have problems believing everthing companies tell me and apart from that i'd have to buy a new one and they're not cheap....so i thought i'd ask people who i can believe and you are those people.. :D
if you also know where i can purchase the connector please let me know.
thanks all

I've never liked "legacy free" motherboards!

You have 3 choices....
1. Change the camera (I don't know what you call "not cheap" - as you can find models of similar megapixels - but USB,at £50 or less)
2. USB to serial adapter - but don't know if the drivers would work with it.
3. USB Smartmedia reader (can be had for under £10) - and remove and read the card in it.

I'll look up one of each later ... lunch is up now!

1. Cameras (and see also Lidl and Aldi, who sometimes have one in a weekly offer)

2. The USB to serial gizmo

To be honest, it's 50:50 on the camera drivers actually accepting an emulated serial port

3. The card reader

The pictures should appear as standard JPG files on the media - but I have no specific experience of this model.
NB. Take care! - deleting files using the reader often tends to screw up the card for the camera - though FUJI's tend to be more willing to re-initialize a card to their requirements than many other cameras are.

This review even suggests a USB smartmedia reader, as an antidote to the dismally slow serial transfer.

This review indicates that smartmedia up to 64Mb is usable in this camera - and if a fast USB card reader is a bonus with a small card, it's sure as hell essential with a big one!

Doesn't look like Ebuyer are discounting their "bundle", but you might consider a reader AND a larger card, or a more versatile reader in case you get things that use other media formats later

PS. Ebuyer are legendary for poor support, bad service, delays etc. but the prices are good!

If you want a battery and charger set, though, there is only ONE place to go!
http://www.7dayshop.com/catalog/specials.php
NiMH AA/chargers sets at insanely low prices - and extra battery sets as well.
They also have a USB 1.1/2.0 reader (and that's a FAST USB2 device backward compatible with USB1) ay £15.99 - not sure if Smartmedia is fast enough to gain from that if you have USB 2 - and the also do Smartmedia cards.

Dearer than Ebuyer, but the only common complaint is that they are SLOW - 7 day = 7 days AT LEAST... they might have improved - and friends who've used them are happy with them.

Personally, I would recommend the USB Smartmedia reader. You can plug it into any PC or Mac USB port to access the files. The serial to USB adapter is much slower and is far more problematic.

most good puter stores in the uk sell MULTI card (handles about 7 types of memory card/stick ) USB readers for around £19 is about the average price :)
