does any one Know of reg hack that lets you open up explorer in detail mode ie Name, Size, Comments etc. as opposed to the default icon layout?

It's not a reg. hack you need, just click on the choice button and it will list all your choices.

one thing to add:
you should not change the start directory, set the view in "detail mode", close and reopen the explorer;

thanx very much but i think you misunderstood me. what i would like is for explorer to open in detail mode all the time evey time with out having to click the button every time(i was quite aware of that little trick) any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Look under folder options/view -untick "remember each folder's view settings" and use the like current button to set your default.
