Thanks jroc. I went to the services and had no trouble finding it, but it was already running...
So, I did something I was reluctant to do. I went to the Windows XP update site. I let it scan my computer. Typically, I like to pick and choose the updates that I want to install. In this case, I did not want to install SP1, but I did because a message appeared in red saying that it must be installed separately and prior to other updates in order to have all of the critical updates installed and funcional.
What can I say? It worked. Now I finally have installed SP1 even though I have been set dead against ever installing it. I've noticed the subtle new features and so far they aren't too bad (not sure if they are too good either, but time will tell). As long as everything works properly I'm not going to commiserate about having to install SP1.
