eDonkey users, please...

after testing a bit i noticed, that when connected to a small server with only about 50 users i got ID 54
at another time i was connected to a server with a max of 5000 users and about 4500 at the moment i got ID 4874.
perhaps it is just the number of your client on the server
but i dunno how you could get 32billion
FortiTude

p.s. even with ID 54 i got a speed of 40 KB/s and with 4874 about 55KB/s

Well theres my normal user ID in the donk :)

Another thing i have found

If u have a download that is complete or nearly complete but just wont finish

Copy the temp file to another location and rename it to whatever the file was

Example:

Download movie.avi is called temp.13
copy temp.13 to another location and rename it to movie.avi

This works some of the time depending on whether there is a corrupt part in the download or not
I have managed to finish a lot of files this way

Well I cant seem, to put images in my post so i wont show u the image

Hi all you eDonkey users out there,

I'm a Forum Admin for the dutch eDonkey. Reading about your low ID I decided to post some info and possible solutions for you.

Regarding your low ID in eDonkey:

What a Low ID is:
A Low ID is given to the client by the server because for one reason or another, the client is not accepting incomming connections. In general, the order of information for most software on the internet is for the client computer (yours) to connect to another computer, request information, receive it, then close that connection. However, on eDonkey other clients will connect to you, to request information from you (seemingly backwards). The server you are connected to will help out, and facilitate connections between a Low ID user and a High ID user, but, two Low ID clients can not communicate. This means that many possible file sources are not available to those with Low IDs.

Possible solutions:

1. Software Firewall
If you are running software like Norton Personal Firewall, Tiny Firewall, Zone Alarm, BlackIce or any other personal firewall software, you may need to set it up to allow eDonkey to function correctly. In order to function fully and receive a High ID, your firewall needs to allow eDonkey to run as a server. Allowing communications to be started from other clients to your machine. You may need to consult the documentation that came with the firewall to perform this step. Alternatively, with some more advanced firewalls, or firewall settings you will need to open ports 4661 and 4662 TCP for both incoming and out going connections, as well as port 4665 UDP for both incoming and outgoing connections.

2. Hardware firewall
Setting up your hardware firewall is a tad more difficult, but if you have one chances are you know what your doing. You will need to set it to allow both incoming and outgoing connections on 4661 & 4662 TCP and port 4665 UDP.

3. Routers & Gateways
If you have tried all of the above steps, and are still receiving a low id, and are running a router or a gateway, set it up to forward the applicable ports directly to the machine running eDonkey.

4. Proxies
Though less common than Firewalls, Routers or Gateways, in terms of causing problems, some internet service providers require you to connect to the internet through a proxy. The proxy information should be available from your Internet Service Provider, though if you are required to use one, chances are you allready have all the information you need. Take a look in your web browser (IE -> tools, internet options, connections, lan settings, Netscape -> edit, advanced, proxies), there should be a wealth of information available there, namely the address, and port of the proxy. By default, a proxy on port 1080 is either socks4 or socks5, while HTTPS proxies exist on either 8000 or 8080.

Hope this will help to get you a high ID.

And regarding the fact that some files won't finish. Just pause and restart the download. Usually it will finish within seconds.

Another thing about connecting to a server, or having trouble connecting to a server. You could use a additional program called Auto-Updater (version 3 from OBC Maurice is out). This program will connect to an up to date serverlist, and implement it into your own server.bat. Another thing you could try is Overnet. This is a serverless version from eDonkey developers. It's not full grown, but more people are using it, and in the end it will replace the donkey.

...all of which goes to prove what a pile of cack EDonkey is!

If you have to go through all that mumbo jumbo simply to connect, let alone d/l or u/l stuff then what's the point?

I dumped EDonkey ages ago, because I could never get connected, or by the time I did I was auto disconnected by my ISP 2 hour limit!

Get the latest WinMX instead. It takes about a minute to set up, takes about 5 seconds to connect to the network, and you have access to millions of .mp3's and all sorts of other goodies.

It's also a 1 minute process to d/l the latest OpenNap network list, which takes a few seconds to copy into the WinMX folder then giving you a load more servers to choose from in addition to the WinMX peer network.

I got PS7 (480 Mb) on a 56K connection after 7 days despite the queues plus loads of other stuff within hours. The hash checks go a long way to ensure that the d/l's won't be corrupted either.

Lazer.

thx LIQUIDATOR for your help,
i'm using mldonkey instead of edonkey client at the moment, so i don't know how to get out my ID.
after reading your post i added the portforwarding for the ports 4661,4662 tcp and 4665 udp to my router and i hope it'll speed up my downloads a bit.

ps: one of my d/l still wont finish:
dvl-b2a.avi ; 122.3 % ; downloaded 897529489 Bytes of 733906944 Bytes; Rate -
(i paused and resumed it, but i didn't help)
