dvdrw capable of watching dvd's??..

umm how come my dvdrw isnt capable of playing dvd's??..i thought that all dvdrw r capable of playing dvd cause its capable of burning dvd's....is there like a codec that i need....or is it that my dvdrw cant play dvd's at all??..these r my cd drives that i have installed....

DVDRW IDE1004
TDK CDRW121032

two things to pay attention:
- set up "your" region code at the drive in device manager;
- you need a DVD player software like WinDVD or PowerDVD; they often came bundled with burners or VGA cards; usually the bulk versions don't have the software package;

software players often interact in a problematic way with the installed VGA and AGP driver; updating those drivers may help too;
changing between on/off playback in "Overlay" mode and "Hardware Acceleration" is an option too;

dont know y this driver which is a DVDRW cant even play dvd's when its capable of buring dvd's....
for sure they are compatible in playback commercial/pressed DVDs;
for playback compatibility of burned DVD-R or DVD+R see the manual and fabricator's homepage;

umm can u like give me guides to what ur telling me to do....i dont even understand what i need to do and all....

will try it, but need some system details;
please tell me your motherboard fabricator and type; same about your graphic card; also what Windows you use;

will give you my details as example:
MB: ASUS A7N8X Deluxe
VGA: Sapphire Atlantis Radeon 9600 XT
OS: W2k SP4

did a search at Intervideo's hompage, result is they don't offer patches/updates for WinDVD 4;

changing between on/off playback in "Overlay" mode and "Hardware Acceleration" is an option too;
these things should be options in WinDVD's configuration/properties menu; try to change them to see if it effects;
personally i don't use WinDVD, my choice is PowerDVD;

well i tried messing around with windvd a bit....still cant get it to work and i also got powerdvd wouldnt play either....well this is what u wanted to know....umm i dont know what my motherboard fabricator and type is so imma just put whatever i know and c on here through system information....

OS Name: Microsoft Windows XP Professional
System Manufacturer: D850GB
System Model: GB85010A
System Type: X86-based PC
Processor: x86 Family 15 Model 0 Stepping 10 GenuineIntel ~1694 Mhz
Total Physical Memory: 256.00 MB
Adapter Description: NVIDIA GeForce3

this means your board is an Intel D850GB and contains the Intel i850 chipset;
did a search for you at Intel's hompage, no AGP driver updates are available, so i think XP comes with the lastest version;

Adapter Description: NVIDIA GeForce3
go there to get the latest NVIDIA VGA drivers: http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp_2k_53.03

a note at last: i'm at official journey from monday to thursday, so i can't reply instantly; :)

@ Tommie,

You need to provide amplifying information.

What brand (manufacturer) of "DVDRW" do you have? Is it a + (plus) - (minus) or a dual (±).

What exactly type of DVD are you trying to play in your "DVDRW"?

Some DVD recorders only play DVD+R, some only play DVD-R and some can play DVD±R.

Until you provide specific information about your "DVDRW" and what type of "DVD" you are actually attempting to play or it is going to be very difficult to provide any help.

Regards,
Coaster

Did you tried play back an original commercial, pressed Video DVD?

another thing to find the source of your problem is trying to play back a usual video (MPG or AVI) at your HDD via WinDVD or PowerDVD; so you can see, if the player software itself and your VGA drivers does working correct;

so the player software and VGA drivers are fine;

check "Add/Remove" if you have IAA - Intel Application Accelerator installed; if so, uninstall it and use the generic M$ standard drivers for your IDE controller;
also go sure your DVDRW drive is running in UDMA mode;

u said to check in my add/remove....do u mean in control panel add/remove??
well i dont c any IAA installed....and i dont know how to install the M$ driver u said....and make my dvdrw run in UDMA mode??..im like totally lost dude....

yes; thats what i meant; if IAA is not listed there, it's good, it's not installed;

How to enable DMA:
woody said:
Here is the procedure to enable DMA:

To enable DMA mode using the Device Manager

1.
Open Control Panel > System > Device Manager.

2.
Double-click IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers to display the list of controllers and channels.

3.
Right-click the icon for the channel to which the device is connected, select Properties, and then click the Advanced Settings tab.

4.
In the Current Transfer Mode drop-down box, select DMA if Available if the current setting is "PIO Only."
If the drop-down box already shows "DMA if Available" but the current transfer mode is PIO, then the user must toggle the settings. That is:

• Change the selection from "DMA if available" to PIO only, and click OK.

• Then repeat the steps above to change the selection to DMA if Available
at the main branch of "IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers" you can also check the related drivers; there should be nothing than M$ drivers listed;

and i have to ask again: Did you ever tried playing back an original commercial, pressed Video DVD? :confused:

this is what i BEEN had for my "DMA MODE"....

Primary IDE Channel

Device 0
Transfer Mode: DMA if available
Current Transfer Mode: Multi-Word DMA Mode 2

Device 1
Transfer Mode: DMA if available
Current Transfer Mode: Ultra DMA Mode 4

Secondary IDE Channel

Device 0
Transfer Mode: DMA if available
Current Transfer Mode: Multi-Word DMA Mode 2

Device 1
Transfer Mode: DMA if available
Current Transfer Mode: Ultra DMA Mode 5

u asked if i tried any original commercial pressed dvd??..ummm im getting lost there....ALL i can say is i tried ALL kinds of dvd's and it still has the same problem....on my other computer i have a "DVD Rom" installed and it plays whatever dvd i put in it....im thinking that my DVDRW doesnt have a DVD Rom installed maybe thats y i cant play dvd's??..
