DVD Skips and Locks up at end!

First of all, thanks to all who have created this forum and to those who take the time to anwser all the threads.

This is my first post and I don't want to ask any questions which have already been answered within the forum. So I have spent many hours over the last 4 weeks reading and studying the tutorials. I have purchased, hacked, downloaded nearly every piece of software mentioned on this site to make things work. I have managed to create 48 coasters for locations around the house and now I am thinking about using some as Christmas gifts this year.
I am using an LG DVD RW +- and DVD-Ram writer. I have winxp home version, and an athlon xp 2600 processor. My media is 4x which I believe may be too fast anyway. I am going to buy myself some Ritek GO4's tomorrow as suggested here. I have 512k memory and my DVD recorder is set to my secondary ide.
I have been able to actually get most of my programs to complete successfully and eject the backup of my DVD. However, when I play it in any of my players or any of my friends, they run fine until they get near the end at which point they begin skipping and then lock up. This happens particularly quicker if I jump to the last chapter. Has anyone had and similar problems with theirs? I am not done reading all of the threads in this forum but I figured while I read, I might as well give a post and say hello.

Thanks again to all who take the time from their schedule.

Welcome. :) I think the idea you have of changing media to ritek should fix your problem. Unless you trying to copy scratch media. Anyway lets know how you make out.

Welcome to the forum. Skipping/freezing problems near the end of a disk is almost ALWAYS due to poor media. You mention your using 4x media but didnt mention the brand. What speeds are you actually burning them at ? Are you able to burn at a lower speed, if so then try one and see how it plays back. As you already suggested, go for the Ritek GO4's

Definitely sounds like a media problem as above <> is your burner the master on the secondary IDE (they seem on the whole to perform better as master)

+ make your burns about 4.25GB to 4.3GB that keeps the burn away from the edge of the media!

Thank you so much for replying guys. I appologize for wasting your time though. I found a similar thread to mine yesterday. I should have searched a little harder since the answer was already in here.

I am going to try some memorex I bought at Wal-Mart today until I get some Ritek's in. There doesn't appear to be any local stores which carry the Ritek's. They all seem to carry TDK's which are almost 2$ per DVD at Comp USA. Anyway, I ordered a spool of 50 off the net at $0.77 each. That didn't seem to be a bad price. I have no idea what media I was using since it was not labeled when I bought them at a comp. show. I am however burning at 2x.

Write Media solved problem

I rushed home last night, popped in the new Memorex DVD-R I bought at Wal-Mart for $19.97 for a pack of 10 (a bit expensive) but it worked. I was able to burn in one shot a movie from my hard drive that I had previously used 44 no name brand that I bought at a show thinking I was getting a great deal. Has anyone tried the TDK brand? They are expensive, but i was wondering if they are any good?

Some are good and some are bad! Use DVD Decrypter and tell us who makes them. Also in most cases you can get media on line cheaper.

DVDs failing towards the end

First post so here goes!! Hope someone can help. I'm useing a NEC 1300A writer with the latest firmware revision on a P4 2.8 PC and useing Ritek G04 disks but I'm getting a lot of failures. I use DVD Shrink to both copy and re-author the DVDs and don't get any failures on burning. But when I try to replay them on my Sony player (and a few other players), a fairly large number freeze then fail towards the end. It doesn't seem to matter whether I use Ritek, Princo or other disks or whether I use + or - the failure rate is about the same. I'm beginning to wonder if it's the burner itself but have heard nothing but good things about it. I've also tried DVD Decrypter but nothing changes. HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The above issue has been discussed innumerable times before, and the suggeested remedy is always the same:
Use always GOOD quality media, and do not let the amount of burned data exheed 4.25GB, no matter if your disk's nominal capacity is 4.37GB. Read errors towards the end of the disk is the norm, not the exheption.
