DVD-RW - what do you think?

Don'y know much about the LG, other than they are one of the strongest champions of the "triple" (+/- and -RAM as well).

Are you specifically after a black one, and particularly retail packed?

The NEC 4551 (Labelflash) can not only label the top side of Labelflash media, but brings back "T@2" capability to make a low grade image on the remaining part of the burn surface (needs media that naturally shows a significant burn contrast).

Not really bothered too much about the colour although the rest of the front of the machine is baige so a baige one would look better.

Also not bothered about a retail pack as this would replace the DVD-Rom that i have just now.

saw the NEC one and just going to have a look at the specs.

I got an NEC 4550 for Christmas. Love it. :)

If you want a Dual layer DVD+/-RW with DVD-RAM support, its a great deal for about $50.

Just got the new Drive today and installed it which took about 5 minutes.

At first it burnt a DVD then would not read it but after rebooting and burning another it reads it now.

the only downside is having to buy special disks for the burning of the labels as i have just got a batch of Imation DVD+R 8X.

But they will be of use as backing up a lot of stuff.

Do not use labels- for your own good. Buy a direct printing enabled printer, and use DVDR printable media (e.g. Taiyo Yuden, Ritek).
Labels tend to peel off, and if that happens when the disk spins in your drive... hell happens.

I have a Epson R300 Printer which i find great for photos etc and do not really want buy a new printer.

Do you or anyone know which media will burn the Label direct onto the disk as the NEC 4551 will do?

According to my info, the R300 does support CD printing...
http://www.epson.co.uk/products/inkjet_printers/Stylus_Photo_R300.htm

Did you get a CD carrier sheet with it?

What I found interesting about the NEC 4551, was not so much the introduction of another top labelling system, but the return of T@2 capability last seen on the Yamaha F1.

I'd say the top labelling is too little, too late, compared to the option of Inkjet printable which is faster and in colour.

T@2 is a feature I'd like to have, for tagging a burn that isn't worth the bother of labelling properly, even if you have to squint to see it on some media.
http://www.cdfreaks.com/article/249/5 - example of data side labelling, better than some other reviews suggest.

SHOCK: T@2 is not supported on CD-R (from another review) - that would just about end my interest in the drive, at least as a feature worth having over any of the other alternatives, though the 4550 it's based on is certainly up to NEC's usual standard.

I am totally unconvinced by either Labelflash or Lightscribe (currently better supported) as a method for top labelling, using expensive special media, delivering a monochrome result of unimpressive quality at miserable speed.

Thanks LTR12101B

Just had a look and will have to buy some blank DVD's to check this out as the only ones i have are Imation which has some text etc on.

Some printers have different specs, country-related, eg the Canon Pixmas don't have a CDR printing module in the States (some obscure legal reason), while they do have in EU. Maybe the same applies for Epsons as well?

Not just "blank", it must SAY Printable - not sure if the same applies as for CDs, but there were white top that were not printable, though they took labels better than most.

Inkjet printable is usually available in white and silver forms, though it seems that the white is usually more satisfactory for printing.

I'm assuming the printer is UK spec, since prices were quoted in pounds...

Media:

http://www.xscomputersupplies.com/acatalog/DVD_R_Ink_Jet_Printable_disks.html +R printable
Not sure if they are still the "official" sponsor, so I'll mention an alternative.

LTR

The printer is UK Spec.

Thanks for the links.

Will have a go and buy some "Bulkpaq DVD-R White Printable" from the 1st link that you suggested. and try them out first.

I saw the printable disks when buying them before and wondered what they were for but now i know.

Thanks again.

Good luck!

E-Net brands are budget media (Datawrite, Datasafe, several others)
Bulkpaq is THEIR budget brand, usually the media codes nobody loves (like IS01, AN31) or second rate example of better codes.

Of course, if your drive does well on those unloved codes (some do), then you may rate it a lot higher than if your drive hates it.

50 disks for £6.99 ? ... you get what you pay for - at least it's a cheap way to try out printing them, and the drive is likely to be more tolerant of that class of media than a Liteon drive would be.
