dvd-rom drive and cdr-drive are now listed as "local disk" in explorer iso. their typ

Hi gurus,

This is the story which led the problem :

I have a WINXP PRO system ( HP Vectra Ve8i + Hitachi DVD drive GD-5000 ) running and recently installed a CDR drive ( Aopen CRW3248 ).
I installed also NERO software from the cd accompanying the drive which i supperseeded with the latest 5582 version.
After this latest upgrade, my cdr drive disappeared from from my explorer disk list ( left pane ).
I found "somewhere" the following :

"Nero & XP Diasappearing Drive Solution
Finally got both my drives back, found this reg fix on a Microsoft page dealing with Adaptec and disappearing/corrupted drives. After deleting ALL traces of ahead/nero from registry, perform the following :
Remove the Upperfilters and Lowerfilters values completely from the following registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro
l\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
Hope this helps and works for others with the same problem.

So i started up regedit, exported the key to save it away and than by mistake I deleted the complete key. Rebooted the pc and got the dvd-rom and cdr drive listed as "local disk".
I checked again the registry and noticed my mistake and restored the exported key data back into the registry. Rebooted again and still got the dvd-rom and cdr drives listed as "local disk" in explorer.
So I guess my first mistake has screwed up something else.
The quetsion is : what and where and how ?
Should I hardware wise reinstall the two drives ?
Any help or hints is gladfully accepted.
Thanks in advance.

Now this is a strange one!

Try going in to the device manager and removing the offending drive. Also, select "View hidden devices" from the View menu in case there are any other instances of the drive lurking in there - remove them too.

I would hope that after a reboot or two, your drive will be reconfigured in the system properly.

Thanks again for your reply.
Here is some update on what I did so far after reading your reply :

Still in the situation that I have "local disk" reported as type in the left pane of explorer : device manager lists that both cd drives are installed with the correct brandname and that thier drivers are operational.

Than this is what I have done and the results out of it :

- I completely deinstalled NERO 5582 and INCD for XP.
- When I remove the two drives ( dvd-rom and cd-r ) via device manager reboot WINXP, both drives get recognized as new hardware and they get installed and when I see in explorer I see again both drives listed in the left pane as "cdrom drive". BUT !! When I reboot the system, I got back my problem as before : ie., both cd-drives are again listed as "local disk" !

PS : when I restore the registry key in HKLM/CurrentControlSet/Control/Class/..................... which I saved in the beginning and reboot the XP machine, than there are NO cd-drives listed at all ! When I delete the "filtering keys " I get the cd-drives listed as "local-drives".

Any further ideas or hints ?

Thanks anyway,

Bobke

Thank you all for responding to my help request.

This reply to inform you and the forum that my problem is solved by performing a systemrestore to a date close before the day my problems showed up.
I must admit I was a bit sceptic about the result of the systemrestore I should get, but yes, it automagically restored my system back to a working condition.
Now my drive D: gets listed as DVD ROM and my drive E: as CD/RW ROM.

Thanks for your help.
