DVD Playing Problem

Hope I'm in the right place for this but I need some help.....

The dvd player in my computer up until 10 days ago was playing films perfectly, but the last few days it will not play any. It will play audio cd's, allow installation of software from both cd and dvd and I can browse cd's & dvd's and look at various files with no problem.

I am running an AMD XP1800+ 512 Mb ram, Win 98SE, etc...
Dvd drive shows up as 'atapi dvd-rom 16x'
Dvd software includes: WinDVD v3, WinDVD v5, plus the various others that some films like to install.

I have uninstalled all dvd player software and re-installed but with the same effect.

WinDVD just sits there doing nothing, PCFriendly (off a dvd) keeps asking for a disk to be inserted, InterActual Player looks like its trying to play but nothing shows.

Any ideas guys would be welcome.

Regards and a happy new year to all.
George

reboot,
shut down all apps include backgrounders and Antivir,
clean your temp folder,
double click "KillASPI.bat"
wait for the success message, let close the DOS window,
double click "InstASPI.bat"
