whenever i uninstall the secondary IDE controller (which the drive is on) and reboot, the drive comes back momentarily. however the drive will be 'installed' then it disappears again, even before i had a chance to restart to changes to take effect!

What chipset is your motherboard? What IDE controller drivers you are using, nForce, Intel IAA?
try M$' standard drivers instead and see what happens;

i dunno how i can check whats my chipset. As for IDE controller, i'm not sure too but isst the Bus Master IDE COntroller? it is the INTEL one. how do i change them to MS ? in the properties, it seems to say driver is already provided by MS

i'm sorry i'm beginning to be out of depth here

Start > Settings > Controll Panel > Software: look for IAA - Intel Application Accelerator;
uninstall this software and reboot; then your OS search and installs M$' standard IDE drivers automatically; now reboot again;

Device manager-->Ide Ata/Atapi Controllers-->Intel PCI Ide controller-->update drivers-->I choose myself(advanced)-->don't search,I define what drivers to install--> from that tab,choose the Standard dual channel PCI Ide controller to install and reboot afterwards.

PS:My system is not an US-English 1,so some names might differ from a real english os,since I translated the path from my own os.
