Double set of icons

After I installed XP SP1 I've had two different problems. One that's explained in my earlier post 'you can now turn off your computer', and this second one, which is the most annoying bug I've ever seen. Okey, here it goes...

When I put a shortcut to my desktop, or when I copy/move a file to my desktop, this problem occurs. Right next to this newly copied/moved file or shortcut there is ALWAYS created a "ghost" of this file. An identical copy of the file/shortcut I decided to put on my desktop. The strange thing though is that when I try to delete the "ghost", it is always the original file/shortcut which is deleted, and the "ghost" stays. When I then try to delete the "ghost" I always get the message "can't read from sourcefile", so it is impossible to delete this "ghost", or whatever I should call it. BUT if i rightclick>update, the "ghost" disappears. It does though never vanish while the original file/shortcut is still on my desktop.

I do not know what to do. Hell, I don't even know what's happening. It's out of my hands. Please help me before I go mad. Since I actually would like to keep SP1 I would rather find a sollution than uninstalling SP1.

Thanx for all help

When I wrote 'update' I of course ment 'refresh'. I've got the norwegian version of winxp, and there the 'refresh' button is named in norwegian, so I had to make the best translation I could think of.

Well... It seems to happen only when I drag/drop files to my desktop, but also when I put a shortcut to the desktop.

When I copy+paste I cannot see a "ghost" at my desktop, but in the explorer it still shows the "ghost" I've been talking about.

I use the winxp theme.

Try setting a bigger response rate to your pointing device when clicking/double clicking (control panel/mouse). Set your mouse to open something by double clicking and not single, maybe this cures the problem.

And do you have a second user in configured in your system, or just you? Finally, does it happen within any folder, or just on the desktop?

Do you have a shortcut to All Users' desktop on your desktop or vice-versa so that whatever you create on either desktop is duplicated on the other? (as if you accidently were in WinExplorer and dragged-and-dropped a shortcut from one to the other)???

I have disabled the 'all users' desktop, start menu, favorites and 'shared documents'... Since I'm the only one using this computer

Well well... I have now fixed the problem. The problem was Tweak xp. At one point where I enable, or disable an option windows starts creating two sets of each shotcut/file I ad to my desktop. I have yet to find out exacly which feature that does this. But I'll report it when I find out, in case anyone else experiences this problem.

Tweak Xp is really a crap. When I had this f**** installed a lot of strange thinghs happened.

I think is better you uninstall this THING and never reinstall again.
All the jobs this does you can do by your hands.

;)

I agree. Most of these "tweak" proggies are useless at best and at worst can do unrepairable harm to your Windows install.

As NetLion said, the best way to tweak your Windows OS.... is manually. You learn more this way as well. ;)
