I just purchased an external USB 2.0 DVD burner. everything works great until i put in a blank dvd. then it says the drive in accessable. but a blank CD-R works fine. i also have a USB 1.1 or whatever its called. but it just said that it would run at a slower pace. could anyone give me some advice please.

Hi pudge, Welcome to our forum! 
i don't think your problem depends on the USB mode; i think it's a typical problem when using incompatible DVD media; try to get some blancs made by Ritek, or look at your DVD burner fabricator's homepage for a firmware upgrade and a media compatibility list;
