Corrupt ZIP and RAR files !!!

Calibra Does anyone have the same experience as me ??? I seem to get a high percentage of RAR and ZIP files with CRC erors, when I download a .exe file there seems to be no problem..I am using the latest Winzip and Winrar. It's a bit frustrating continually downloading and re-downloading the same files. It always seems to be right at the end of the extraction process, if that's significant....I have a high speed connection, so it helps a bit, but I'd like to resolve this problem...I thought it might be bad connections on the IDE connectors so I changed them all + a nes HDDoes anyone have the same experience as me ??? Any ideas please ????

Hi, there's a tool to repair the CRC errors for zip files, go to w*w.acedown.com and search for zip repair.

Good Luck
:) RoGer :)

I went to w*w.acedown.com and search for zip repair, I actually downloaded this recently but the crack reports that the byte size is wrong, am I doing something wrong ????

Thanks

Even if I manage to repair the CRC errors, is it normal to get such errors....I downloaded WINONCD 5. Eventually ALL zip files were downloaded ok...no errors...then when I tried to extract the RAR files...all I got was corrupt and CRC errors

Thanks

PS I am using WinRar 3.0

and Winzip 8.1

use winrar 3.0 and if there are parity or par files with the post get those too and use RAID tools or mirror tool to check the files if there is a sfv file use winsfv to check the files to find which ones wrong !! :D

there tends to be a few probs with files that are compressed with winrar 3 not being able to unpack them without crc errors if anything other than winrar 3 is used !? :(

I have the same problems with an winzip archive which i have created on my pc; i don't know the reason but, after some day,
i tried to open it and it was impossible even with winrar.
I must say that i've not a great experience with these two programs, i only use them for the every day operation.

Try using Powerarchiver 8 rc2, i had similer problems with crc errrs opening files and this seemed to help. Well at least i get a lot less errors.

I think I might have already tried that.....

Sorry, but this is the first obvious choice...

I think the problem may be more significant

WinRar errors

The new winrar 3.00 use a new (diferent) encryption, and a few other critical enhancements. It is not compatible with all the older winrar files, so when you have older files it is posible that you get errors. Look here for aditional information
h**p://files.rarlab.com/rar/WhatsNew.txt Also when you (maybe?) patch the program, there are many NOT good working patches available. A good patcher is included in the atachment. On rarlab.com you can get winrar 3.00 in your language. Otherwise you can use an older version such as winrar2.90 or older. Hopes this info wil sort you out. Have fun!!

..........

I found the main cause of CRC errors was download agents splitting files for download.
Set your file split to 1 (most do 4-8 by default).
This sorted out all my problems.
eg. i downloaded 42x15mb RAR files using Flashget using an 8 split - every single file had a CRC error! haha. Redownloaded using a split of 1 - all perfect.
Peace

I wonder where you got that impression dude... To quote the reference text you have posted your self:
RAR 3.0 can unpack archives created by all older RAR versions.
look at this pokopiko 1)"Please note that new SFX modules are able to unpack only RAR 3.0 archives. They must not be used with archives created by older RAR versions.e incompatebility of winrar 3.00".

And this 2)"RAR 3.0 archives can be unpacked by any RAR version beginning from RAR 2.9, currently it is 2.9 and 3.0".

And this 3)"Default volume naming scheme is changed from volname.rar, volname.r00, ..., to volname.part001.rar, volname.part002.rar, etc. Switch -vn and "Old style volumes names" option in the archiving dialog allow to use the old extension based scheme.

My thinking was mostly based on the third point that when you proces an older file (with the old .r00 extention) you can get errors, because winrar 3.00 has by default the new extention (.part001.rar) wich is totaly diferent. So when you changed the setting in winrar to old settings", it will hopefully solve the problems. I overlooked the fact that he was using winrar 3.00, but there are some incompatebility issues with the diferent versions of winrar or other unzip programs. well i'm trying only to be helpfull, sorry.

This is all very interesting !!!

It's certainly good to talk !!! ( That wasn't a plug for BT !!!)

I thought I was alone with the CRC corrupt file issues, but apparently not. I will try using WINRAR 2.9, I'm not sure if you can have both versions installed at once...I'll try. Also I have tried with and without download managers. Strangely enough I think I get less errors when I download ONE file at a time, I'll take the advice and turn segmenting off, I was always suspicious of this. Incidently when i download a .exe file it rarely is corrupted.

The other issue I have is when I try to install a driver, or similar I find that one that had worked fine for ages, suddenly reports errors, sometimes shutting down the PC and restarting allows the file to install.

But usually I have to redownload it, or copy it from a CD. Someone suggested I reformat my 80GB HDD (I have 2 HDD one 13GB and one 80GB) and repartition it again, I could move my data to an empty 20 GB partition, but feel concerned that it may get corrupted in the transfer. Is there a utility to transfer and verify ???

I did recently change all my IDE cables in the belief that a dodgy cable might be the culprit, and suprisingly it seemed to work ok for a while, now it's back to n o r m a l
