I would like to see a tutorial for coverting SVCD to DVD. That could also come in handy.
Yep working on that, I got my burner 4 days ago ! I had been converting AVI to DVD though for a while and a mate was burning them out. I'm looking at putting my Die Hard 1,2 & 3 onto the one DVD with Menu, for example.

I've done a few svcd to dvdr conversions. I couldn't merge the three svcd files together properly so I converted them using the dvd template in TMPGEnc (it also converted the audio to 48khz) then they merged fine with the audio being insync as well.

But using TMPGenc is a re-encode step and lowers the quality even further and its not needed.

Basically you join the MPG files together (TMPGEnc can do this), demux the new MPG file. Convert the Audio to 48khz if needed. Use DVD Patcher to set size to 720x576/480, Author and save project. Exit, run DVDPatcher again and change back to 480x576/480, run Authoring prog again load in saved project and then compile. Then burn. No re-encodinging needed and quality is retained.

I think your method CM will only work on a svcd capable machine?
Or not? :)
Not tried it yet.
Too many straight dvd2dvd to do. ;)

Yep agreed Dave not all standalones are capable of playing the svcd format still.Thats why I went with TMPGEnc to make them more compatable and its still buggy for me when I try and merge the svcd files.

Absolutely NOT, got nothing to do with SVCD's. DVD2SVCD uses CCE to re-encode the AVI file to DVD compliant format. If you look at the options of DVD2SVCD, its just a front end to produce VCD's, SVCD (the original reason the author wrote it) and DVD's using CCE or TMPGEnc. Why the hell would anyone want to use TMPGEng to re-encode to DVD format since it takes twise as long as CCE is bejond me. But then use what your comfortable with.

TMPGenc is best for low bitrate streams like VCD, okay for SVCD and not so good for DVD. CCE on the other hand, is crappy at lowbit rate VCD, great for SVCD, fantastic for DVD (thats what it was made for). The choice is yours.

I'm not talking about cce or tmpgenc.
Its the dvdpatcher thing.
If your machine does not play svcd the the header trick will not work.
Or am I wrong again. lol :D

BTW I have already done avi 2 dvd using your guide.
That came out great. thanx ;)

My missunderstanding, sorry, I think your right! But, none of my friends own a DVD Player that wont playback SVCD's so I really cant confirm that one way or the other. Lots of mixed reports I've read elsewhere.

Just done an svcd to dvdr as per your instructions.
Plays on my svcd capable player, but not on my non compatable one.
It starts to load and even changes the aspect on my tv but then just stops.
Not sure there is away around that, without re sizing and cropping the picture severely.
The player plays vcds and dvd-r but not svcd.

I also done a vcd to dvdr (was good to fit 3 movies in a dvdr) but my player does not play the picture, plays only the sound.
I´ll try to make an svcd to dvdr to see what happens.

Dave, thanks for confirming that. The main problem is the width at 480, its just NOT a DVD standard. Needs to be 720,704 or 352 pixels wide.

Looks like for 100% compatability, then it needs to be re-encoded to proper DVD compliant mpeg2 stream. But then if your DVD Player plays SVCD's fine then there should be no problems and great to have 2,3 or 4 movies on the 1 DVD.

I re did 2 svcd movies with root/individual menus chapters buttons the works.
It works on the non svcd machine!!
Maybe the secret is not to have the movie autostart. ie delete first play movie.
Once the film is loaded maybe u are ok.
Of course this is using spruce up, but i made the image with image tools and burnt the image with dvd decryptor.
I will test the disc on a non vcd and svcd standalone soon and post the results. ;)

Thanks for that, keep it coming mate.

I'd be interested in the results of burning the authoured VIDEO_TS folder out with Nero, UDF/Iso mode rather than the double action of making ISO file and then burning with DVDDecrytor though.

Unless i install an older version of Nero I cant help there.
5.5.10 has not given me one dvd that plays on all my test machines. A bug in the latest version by all accounts. ;)

Had a play around with all this and found that using prassi to do the discs works better for me than nero. The gui isnt as nice as nero but the dvds have come out more compatable.
