Choppy playback

Lot's of people are raving about the Main Concept Encoder, but I have not had any experience with it to make any call that way. Supposed to be quite fast.....
Yes is quite fast and I'm sure that the reason others are saying its good. Compare the results to a slow TMPGenc encode (or better still a CCE encode) and its the worst of those 3 by a long shot. CCE give speed and quality but not suited for the newbie and is expensive.

Thanks for that info CM. I won't bother with it then. I'm quite happy with CCE, for doing long films like LOTR TTT, and the transcoders work fine for me for the shorties.......

Give the freebie a try 1st to see if it will suit your needs, and you like the program, before investing any money. It's just a suggestion. There are other encoders out there you may prefer. Greetings again,

I loaded TMPGEnc and tried it out. What I did in the past was to edit the avi file (get rid of bad shots and transitions) before I made an mpeg. It appears TMPGEnc can not be used to edit the avi first. When would I be able to do this? Would I have to use MovieStar to also edit and save as a new avi that I can import that into TMPGEnc to make an MPEG?

How would you do it?

ps. I been talking to the Poacher in "software" about DVDlab

Agreed. Just trying to keep it as easy as possible, for now. He already knows moviestar, and it works nicely for choppping, and combining.

Carl, you can try an edit with MovieStar, or have a look at http://www.virtualdub.org/
It's a free editor, but more to learn........
But that's what makes thall so fun, eh?

Hello again,
Today I used TMPGEnc to make an .m2v and .wav file from my original avi. I then brought those files into MyDVD. I also brought in an mpg of the same avi that I made in MovieStar. I couldn't tell much difference. Also the sound (wav) did not synch up with the video(m2v). I like MovieStar because I can capture, adjust brightness on the fly, edit and render an mpg all in the same program.

I think DVDComplete has been my bigest problem. My VHS tapes are not in the best shape. Nothing is going to fix that. I'm satisfied with the quality I get now if I can just maintain reliable playback. I think MyDVD does a better job. The only thing I liked better about DVDComplete was how you can scroll through the movie and add chapter markers quickly and easily. But with MyDVD I can bring the movie in mutliple times and adjust the start and stop times for each segment - thus creating "chapters".

Do you capture video from a VHS? If so, how do you do it?

This subject is big and flexible. Everyone's suggestion is another opportunity to learn. However, I'm going to take a look at Pinnacle Studio8. I downloaded the manual. It is being promoted as a replacement for both MovieStar and DVDComplete.

Thanks for your continued interest. Thanksgiving and Christmas decorations will occupy some of my time the next few days. I may try capturing my next movie and using MyDVD to author before the end of the week. My Ritek disks should be arriving soon. I'm getting tied of testing. I'll let you know in a few days how it turned out.

With the All in Wonder Card, and ATI software that came with it. I use My DVD, now version 5, to author.

Happy Holidays, Carl.

I was able to find info on the All in Wonder Card on the web. I couldn't find info on the DVC80. I think you said you had experience with both. If so, how would you compare your card to the DVC80?

Hope your holiday was good to. Today it's turkey sandwiches.

I actually had a different model, that had a breakout box, and a PCI card that went into tne computer. After I bought the all in wonder, I no longer needed it, so off to ebay it went.

I have to tell you, movie star is a nice simple interface, and is quite good for what you are doing.

The all in wonder was purchased not only for the capturing, but for the tv tuner, tivo like PVR, and because it is a great 3D card as well. The capturing is superb, IMHO, and I would never go back.

You can still use movie star withthe files captured from the all in wonder too. I like the fact that I can capture in native DVD resolution, and set the bitrate properlly so no reencoding is needed. I can just drop the files straight into My DVD and author them.

You are evidently doing quite a bit of editing, and movie star will serve your purpose for that. I am fortunate enough to own Adobe Premiere, which is the end all of video editors, so thats what I use now.

Thanks for your reply. I appreciate the all the good details you provide.
I think you're right. I am comming to the conclusion that I need to steer toward simplicity. It is interesting to hear about all the different approaches in this forum. I sense that the experienced user prefers to integrate many packages together to give the best solution.

I did lots of work last weekend cleaning up the mess in my basement so I can take last year's Christmas gifts down. I didn't get a chance to make any progress on this.

I got to tell you I did look at Studio 8 (Pinnacle). I am quiet excited about the features. I downloaded the manual at
http://www.pinnaclesys.com/support/display.asp?ProductID=454&SubDocTypesID=64. I bought the package on line for $39 (special deal to upgrade from MovieStar). I want to see if I can successfully author the same mpg files that tested poorly with DVDComplete. If it works as good as MyDVD I might stay with Studio 8. If not, I'll continue on with MyDVD. I'm going to check out the differences between MyDVD 4 and MyDVD 5.

I'm still waiting for my Ritek disks anyway. Talk to you later in the week.

Dec 6 update: I finally got my disks. I Also tried Studio 8 on the same mpg files I've been testing all along. The results were good - just like with MyDVD. I really like the features of Studio 8. Adding chapters and menus is very freindly and flexible. It will allow me to capture, edit and author all in the same package. It took almost 6 hours for the program to render, compile and burn a disk. It seems to be doing a thorough job of it. I'm going to burn some copies on Ritek disks tomoorow. If everything is still OK, I'll move on to my next video (finally). Thanks for your help.

Dec 9 update: I am very discouraged. I am using Ritek disks and Studio 8 and I still see some of the problems I had earlier - the voice is slightly head of the the video. Although the large pixtels seem to be gone. So I am still wondering if I can ever achieve playback as reliable as I get with a rental movie.
