changing regions and recording CDs & DVDs afterward

Hello all - first timer here, greetings to you from tropical Upstate NY! :D

Since I'm not an expert I am a bit nervous about installing anything that may make my system compromised, so I have a question about DVD regions, changing them and how that affects *recording* afterward. I have a Dell Dimension 4600C, WinXP Pro with a DVD-CDRW drive in it - it is a Region 1 player. My machine is loaded with Roxio's DVDMax player. The DVD device is a Philips DVD+RW SDVD 6004.

I went and bought a Region 2 DVD (I'm nuts about the movie - it's out of print in the States :rolleyes: ) - this means changing the region on the DVD in my computer. From reading lots of posts here, I gather I can use RegionFree or something like that, but I am concerned about the DVDMax thing only allowing 5 changes and then freezing in that state. Also, I don't know how these changes will affect my ability to write CDs. I'm actually getting ready to buy RegionFree, but wanted to know if it affects CD recording.

It would also be nice to back this up to NTSC so I could watch it on my home system... but that's a more advanced question ;-) one thing at a time, agreed? :p

Any feedback would be *greatly appreciated*!!

Hi Poacher and VIPER_1069;

Thanks for the tips and apologies for not introducing myself in the new members area; I just plunged into simple searching in this section instead :eek: !

Will give all that a try and cross my fingers. Hard to believe those *free* programs on LAZ's guide are what I need... I am used to buying and using, but am willing to try anything! ;)

Thanks again you folks!
