cdrw drive speed question

I just installed a 16x cdrw drive. Whenever I attempt to use EasyCD Creator it only recognizes 8x unless I run the system test. 8x is too fast for some burns but if I run the system tests it recognizes 4x,8x,12x,16x. Why not 2x or 1x?

The same goes for Nero. However, it recognizes 8x and 16x before I run system tests. After the test it recognizes 4x,8x,12x, and 16x. Why no 1x or 2x ?

Can I make these programs remember all the write speeds that my drive is capable of instead of running a system test everytime? And can I make the programs recognize that the my drive burns at 1x and 2x and remember those as well?

Is there a setting that I am not aware of? something in the BIOS maybe?

Please help and thanks in advance.

My burner is an HL-DT-ST CD-RW GCE-8160B
It is packaged with my Gateway but I believe the manufacturer is Hitachi.

I do not know how to determine the firmware. Any help with that please?

Yes, I'm aware that most people that really know about cdrw software consider Adaptec/Roxio to be junk. I'm inclined to think the same. Nonetheless, it is what I purchased because I knew little about other cdrw software that was available.

Am I looking for the word "firmware" ?

I don't see it but I do see "driver version". Is this it?

driver version: 5.1.2535.0

Goldstar / Lucky Goldstar / LG - that is the maker of your drive model.

In Easy CD Creator, it may help if you CHOOSE to run Sytem tests yourslf, rather than allowing them to run before the burn (which is what I'm guessing is happening) - that should preserve the results.

Can't find system tests in Nero? - where are they?

If neither of those work for you, then there's plenty more and this is a great place to find them!

Ok, found the firmware: revision 1.52

I found a Dell Computer revision of 2.11
Will this only be compatible with a Dell Computer? My cdrw drive is in a system made by Gateway and I have never done this before so I don't screw up my machine.

Hi!
The GCE8160B is unable to write at lower speeds. It can only burn at 4x and higher...don't know why they made it
And yes: The firmware you mentioned is only for DELL Computers.
But there is a firmware you can use. Revision 2.01

h**p://www.lgeservice.com/GCE8160BFirm201-readme.htm

There you can get it.

Thanks Levi, I was beginning to think my new CDRW is a peice of crap.

If anybody understands why these drives do not write lower than 4x I would like to know.

I am already on version 2.01 firmware but I'll keep the link anyway.

Thanks to everyone!!

Some of the newer drives are locked so they won't write at lower speeds. It is a hardware setting that cannot be changed.4X is a safe speed for any application. So no need to worry.:)
