CD writer stopped working

I use my CD writer periodically, and when I tried recently for the first time in three months, it failed.

Symptoms:

(a) 'hang' on simulate of CD - around 7% in NERO
(b) similar hang using alternate s/w - Musicmatch jukebox - for CD

I am building up a fine collection of coasters, but knowing that you can get to mich of a good thing, I tried:

(a) re-downloading ASPI layer
(b) downloading latest nero

Now;
(a)Nero still hangs
(B)as does Musicmatch jukebox.

Any suggestions please?

Thx
:confused:

When I had this problem, a little over a year ago, it turned out it was my Plextor 8432 that was dying on me. Not that it had been used much. I guess that being a smoker, the lens was foggy and some attempts to get it cleaned did not result in success. It gave me to opportunity to upgrade my burner to a model that provided the then latest technology...

he/she gets the error message even in simulation mode;
this can't be a foggy lense or a to faintly laser beam;

@debbie
more details please;
What OS?
What other burning soft besides Nero and MM JB?
Why did you install an ASPI layer (Nero and MM JB didn't need it)?
What type is your IDE-Controller? try to install the latest official IDE Busmaster driver (chipset drivers);
Any paket writing software (InCD, DirectCD) installed?
What version of M$ MediaPlayer do you use? Inclusive the crapy burning engine?
RealPlayer (plus) inclusive crapy burning engine?
(if XP) Did you disabled IMAPI burning engine?

Thanks for responding. Much appreciated!

so it's O.K.; WinME needs an ASPI layer; install ForceASPI it's better then all other (following) ASPI versions;
ForceASPI: http://www.cdrbase.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=24146&highlight=forceaspi
>What type is your IDE-Controller? try to install the latest official IDE Busmaster driver (chipset drivers);
good question. how do I check it - is that in 'windows settings'
Start > Settings > Controll Panel > System > Devices > IDE-Controller;
and tell us the brand and version of your Motherboard (eg ASUS A7V266E);
>?What version of M$ MediaPlayer do you use? Inclusive the crapy burning engine?
"Version 7.00.00.1440"
run the MediaPlayer setup again, choose add/remove, remove "Adaptec Burning PlugIn";

after this all is done, reboot, download the latest Nero demo version (it's also the update), install it over your old version, reboot and try a simulation;

Your above link takes me to an postig which refers to ASPI 4.6.0.

I now have 4.7.1 - is there anything known to be wrong with 4.7.1?

ASPICHK shows 2 lines

APIX.VXD 4.71 27723 bytes
WNASPI32.DLL 4.71 45056 bytes

(How do I get into windows media player add/remove to take out adapatec burning plugin)

Do i still need to remove that with 4.7.1

Thanks again

ya aspi v4.7x is the pitts.
Often causes issues with drives and such.
So far 4.60 (also known as force aspi) is the most stable of them.

However winME didn't really need a new aspi layer.
Me thinks something else is wrong in your system.

this isnt for the faint hearted but it worked on my plex, i removed the cover from the unit and the circuit board which left me with the mechanical parts, these can be moved manually, there are two slide bars that require a slight greasing, this may be why you stop as the grease may have dried up, just move the laser head up and down the slide bars afew times to redistribute the grease
best of luck

yes, overwrite completely 4.71 with the old (best choice) 4.60;
doing that by using ForceASPI's "InstASPI.bat";
after a reboot check again with "ASPICHK.exe", it sould show now: v 4.60 (build 1021)

(How do I get into windows media player add/remove to take out adapatec burning plugin)
Start > Settings > Control Panel > Software > Windows MediaPlayer

I have run forceaspi and now have 4.60 (1021) good so far

Cant find 'software' in my control panel, but have run a SIM anyway having rebooted.

This test is against used R/W disk

Now I get.......................

Did not hang.

after 23 mins:-

IDE-CD R/RW 8x4x32
Invalid Write State
IDE-D R/RW 8x4x32
Could not perform endtrack
Simulation failed at 4x (600 kb/s)

will try again with blank CDR, see if it gives the same

Running simulation against a new CDR disk which has been used before:

Did not hang.

after 2 mins:-

IDE-CD R/RW 8x4x32
SCSI/ATPI command timeout error

IDE-CD R/RW 8x4x32
SCSI/IDE error

IDE-D R/RW 8x4x32
Could not perform endtrack

IDE-CD R/RW 8x4x32
Invalid Write State

Simulation failed at 4x (600 kb/s)

..... strange that the speed was not 8x . . . .

1)what make etc is your burner using?
2) r you coping from hdd or on the fly?
3) turn off programs other then o/s burning apps.

1)what make etc is your burner using?
FREECOM
2) r you coping from hdd or on the fly?
NO
3) turn off programs other then o/s burning apps.
Fair suggestion. I do normally do this, but had not for the two tests above, as I had left my browser active

Test 3
Running simulation against a the CDR disk which had been used before this morning, with nothing else running. This behaved the same as test2 earlier today, except ..........

after 12 mins (took longer!!!) same as last time :-

IDE-CD R/RW 8x4x32
SCSI/ATPI command timeout error

IDE-CD R/RW 8x4x32
SCSI/IDE error

IDE-D R/RW 8x4x32
Could not perform endtrack

IDE-CD R/RW 8x4x32
Invalid Write State

Simulation failed at 8x (1200 kb/s)

..... previous test was 4x due to a NERO option I had inadvertently set . . . .

Thanks to all that have offerred advice

"Software" must be there; maybe it's different called in your native tongue;
make a screen shot and post it here;

NO
What does it mean? Not from HDD, but from CD-ROM and not "on the fly"?

- try to make an image (*.nrg) to your HDD before with Nero's native image recorder;
- image (*.nrg) should be smaller then 650 MB!
- simulate to burn the image to a blank CDR;

if all things doesn't work:
- uninstall MM JB > reboot
- uninstall Nero > reboot
- reinstall (Again!) ForceASPI 4.60 > reboot
- download and install latest Nero > reboot
- try again a simulation to burn the image to a blank CDR;

Do I need to disable my firewall? I have can't be sure that I have done a CD burn successfully since having broadband . . . ...............

I can't find 'adaptec plug in' in my list under add/remove programs when I go into the windows control panel.
in the add/remove list there you should select "Windows MediaPlayer" first > in the following setup screen select add/remove > remove the plugin;

Do I need to disable my firewall?
no, but you have to disable your AntiVirus software before burning;

I know this sounds odd, but I can't see 'Windows Media Player' in my list of programs, even tho it is clearly installed. I have looked thru A to Z - its not there under W for Windows, or M for Media/Microsoft!
