CD-R/RW 20x10 Atapi

Hi, i've worked out this is an Acer Cd writer. Problem i'm having is that for the last few months, alot of the cd's i am trying to burn are either stopping mid-burning, and fail, or they burn sucessfully, but their contents might not be able to be read. Doesn't seem to matter what the contents on the CD are, eg Mp3's, .bin or .iso files. Quite annoying. I'm running Windows XP with SP 1. I checked out the Acer site, and it has something about firmware drivers or updating. I downloaded the small firmware detect program but the version it gives me is H.DH, which doesnt appear on their lists. Any help would be much appreciated.

Yep well i did a check on ASPI, and i had nothing installed. So i have installed 4.7, and i tryed burning some stuff yesterday and they both completed...Not sure if they have any errors or anything, guess i'll find out from a mate tomorrow. With ASPI, should i have wowpost.exe, and winaspi.dll installed? It has ASPI32.sys, and WNASPI32.DLL. I wasn't sure which one i was meant to install. It says for Pentium Processors use XP32, or Itanium processors XP64. I've got an AMD 1.6ghz processor...so i chose 64. Not sure if that was right though. But when i ran the ASPICHK.exe those two wowpost.exe and winaspi aren't installed, and i wouldnt know how to install them. I'm fairly sure ive done the install exactly how it says on the adaptec site.

I've checked my burners properties through Primary IDE Channel in Device Manager, and it has DMA if available on, Ultra DMA Mode 5. Which im sure according to my searches, has told me that it should be on that.

I'm unsure which official firmware i should be using. I downloaded this firmware checking file. And it said my firmware version was H.DH, but i can't see that anywhere, or know what model my burner is. I'll have a look into that. Thanks.

Install aspi4.60-Best aspi uptodate!!!!I posted it here few times--use a search button and look for forceaspi---....So when you finish run chkaspi-----should be a green picture and saying that aspi is properly instaslled with a......same as attachment!!

Yep ta, I have it matching that screenshot now. Whether it has fixed my problem or not? I won't know untill i burn something i guess.

Also, did you disable imapi--if youre running xp????And use some decent software like recordmax or dj for test(you can change it after you see that all is ok!!!

IT HASNT BLOODY FIXED IT! RARRRRRRRRGHARHHGGGG! Just wasted 3 more cd's! Far out. Disable Imapi? I'll see if i can read up about that. Man this is soooo fu*kin annoying!!!!!!!!!!! Might just have to get a new burner. More $ on my pc...far out.

Imapi service can be disabled on settings/control panel/administrative tools/services. Open there the extended tab, find the Imapi system service,rightclick/properties and put startup type to disabled.
also it's strongly recommended to aply KillASPI before InstASPI (in ForceASPI folder)

and like scarecrow told above, try PIO mode not UDMA; he knows, what he's saying;

Ok well i tryed going to PIO and that made my pc boot startup and run so horribly slow. I'll try again...

Ive noticed also that my Acer 16x48 DVD-ROM is not playing DVD's very well. Skipping, Stalling. Far out, this is sooo annoying! Both drives can't be faulty. I can't understand how to update its firmware. I think I've downloaded the right files, but i don't know if they've updated or what. Im runnin XP and there isn't much support for it.

Open your box and check if the master/slave settings of your drive are correct, check also if the ide cables are connected properly and if they are 40 pin instead of 80 pin if your burner and dvdrom are connected to the same cable

Yep, my computer detects them on startup and in BIOS, as Secondary Master DVD 16x48, and Slave 20x10

I've noticed that the secondary IDE cables plug into my Sound Blaster Audigy Sound card. It has has some pins on the side of the card, and the i traced the secondary ide cable to there. Perhaps it has something to do with that? I've had that card since the DVD-Rom was replaced last year. And the Burner hasn't been replaced, but wouldve always been plugged there.

Your secondary IDE cable plugs into WHAT?
I guess that they are just the analog signal cables that plug there, else you may apply the patent for this year's nobel prizes...
And by the way putting a burner as slave to any device (even harddisk) is not a good idea.
Nreover, can you check your DVD specs and see if it can work at DMA mode? I'm 100% sure your burner can't, so putting the burner as master and DVD-ROM as slave will limit the DVd drive to PIO mode, too- you may have to put the DVD as slave to your harddisk.

No no, it seriously plugs in there. The sound cables go from the DVD-ROM aswell. The card has connector pins on the side of it, and the Secondary Cable plugs in there. I found a manual and it says if you've got an ATA hard drive (Seagate Barricuda IV 60gb), performance could suffer, and its not reccomended. I guess i could try it though. I haven't got any thing on the Primary Slave. Yes the DVD ROM can go at DMA mode, which is reccomended for smooth playback, but it skips and stalls.

Try to plug your DVD-ROM as slave to your HD (or even to that IDE port on your soundcard...) and plug the burner alone as master to your secondary IDE slot (adjust the jumpers accordingly, please).
If your HD is master and the DVD slave and it's UDMA enabled you won't have any performance handicap this way (if you have the proper busmaster drivers installed).
I'm not a Creative fan, but I could never imagine a soundcard offering an IDE slot...

Right well i've found my firmware files. Im guessing im going to need some sortve boot disk to get myself into DOS. "Both these tow kinds of flash tools can upgrade the firmware to the same version,
DOS version only can work for pure DOS envirnment, not Windows MS-DOS mode.
And the Windows Version only can work under Win98/Me/2000, it can't suit to Wun95/NT." HAHA whoever wrote that can't spell.

MSDOS prompt aint gonna work. Would like a 98 boot disk get me to dos or something?
