Have you tried capturing using VirtualDUB? It can capture to AVI no probs.

This error is the Newbie Question #1 with Tmpgenc..To fix it you usually just need to raise the priority of the "Direct Show File Reader"..Go to "options" to "enviromental settings" to "Vfapi Plugins" and raise the "Direct show" to "2"...This will get your file loaded Into Tmpgenc 90% of the time...And XVID is supported in Tmpgenc But you need the Codec Installed of cource...
