Buying a Cd Writer
It seems many people are considering buying a new drive. It is an expensive decision!IMPORTANT: before you put the money on the table check the return policy of the store. You don't want hassles after spending a lot of money.Usually the big chains will refund or exchange,no questions asked. You can do all the research and end up with a faulty drive.Get exchange and refund information in writing.

Make a list of what is important to you in a writer. If you want to use cd-text,make sure it will do it.If backing up games is important make sure it will work with the software you want to use.Maybe you want fast DAE.,and so on.When you narrow it down check the manufacturers website. They will always list the write modes and specs.etc.Forums like this and word of mouth are other good sources.Don't expect proper answers from the salesman,he wants to make a sale.

VERY IMPORTANT
Be very careful with rebadged drives, these people buy from other manufacturers. They are usually very slow for critical firmware updates. The support is usually lousy and they usually don't know much about your drive because they didn't make it!

For example, you have a rebadged Plextor that you bought from Creative. There is an important firmware you need, it enables DAO writing with Clone Cd.Creative doesn't have it.So you try and get it from Plextor, they have it.Guess what,it won't work because the id. string is changed for the Creative. You could wait months waiting for Creative to release the firmware. It happens all the time with rebadgers.

If you mostly back up games go here and check the writer's list for writer capabilities.

If audio is your thing check out the writer database here:

Pay the extra and get a major brand,Plextor, Yamaha,Teac,Ricoh,Liteon, etc.Just my two cents.
