Burned DVD's are skipping at end of movie

Here is my setup:
Pentium 4 2Ghz, 512megs ram, 40 meg hard drive,Memorex Dual Format 4X DVD+/- Burner
I'm using USDigitalMedia General 4X DVD-R media ( purchased from their website ( www.usdigitalmedia.com ) and costing $1.20 per disk.
Using DVD Decrypter, DVD Shrink, and IMGTool to make backups of my DVD movie collection.
Here is what has been happening. So far I have made backups of 10 movies, and all showed no errors when being copied. The first few played fine on my standalone DVD player ( generic Portland brand), but then the next few would pause for second and then continue several times towards the end of the movie ( and sometimes a few times in the middle of the movie). The funny thing is, if you I replay the same part that skipped, it will not happen again at the same part. I tried several of my movies in friends DVD players ( a newer Toshiba and a year old Apex). The movies also skip in those players. Some movies that don't skip in my player were skipping in theirs.
Any ideas on this. Could it be my media or just the players. It seems strange to me that some movies are playing fine and some are not, and that the skips don't continue to happen in the same spot.
Thanks for any help, as I don't want to burn any more DVD's until I get to the bottom of it.

Odds are it is the media. Inconsistant quality, ya know. I suggest you try some ritek g04 media. I imagine the problem will go away. A good source is www.meritline.com or www.esbuy.com .

You can find LOTS of crap media in the market today.
If you're using RecordNow, Discjuggler or Nero to burn, order the program to verify the burned data- most likely it will FAIL every time when you burn to cheap media. Of course if you don't do verification you may have the false impression that everyting went fine...
Just stick to good media (might be more expensive than the usual bunch of crap), but they won't dissapoint you...

Yeah, I was thinking it was the media since some disks are OK and some are not. Here are a few more questions:
1. What other programs can I use to verify if the disks have errors????( I don't have NERO, but I do have Roxio which came with my burner)

2. Once I get the better media, would it be OK to copy directly from the DVD-R disks that have problems ( since the copy protection is already stripped) or would the errors be copied also ( sorry if these questions are dumb, but I am new to this)???

3. In your opinion, what media is better for backing up movies. DVD-R or DVD+R??? I tried the DVD+R disk that came with my burner and it works in my standalone DVD player.

Thanks.

Use Record Now max or Nero NOT Roxio

Also Compess to about 4.250MB then U dont hit the edge of the DVDR & as stated Get good Media!!

AFAIK EZCD/DVD cremator can only make coasters, not verification. Can't recall about the other Roxio program (WinOnCD), I think it does verification, not sure anymore.
Verifying the DVD can take much time (approx. the same time needed for burning), but IMHO it's worth it when you burn critical data.

DVD-R is proven to be more compatable. As above, Roxio's software is iffy. I, and many others have the most positive results with Stomp Record Now Max. Since using that program with G04's I have NEVER made a single coaster, or disc that would not play on a variety of players I and friends/family use. I am talking about several hundred discs now.....

Use Ritek G04's or G03's to suit the speed burner you have. Ive tried many many brands, dyes etc, Ritek seem to be the only ones that work everytime and 100% perfect.
Why on earth other other manufacturers cant get their dyes to be as good as Riteks God only knows.
I use Nero and/or DVD Decryptor. You can use DVD Decryptor to rip/decrypt and burn (ISO - read/write) as long as DVD5 format, even your crappy disks providing your dvd drive is able to read all the data 100% perfect (it tells you if errors are found after ripping).
DVD+R's are ok, providing the hardware knows how to read em ...... ie.less compatible with some DVD players.

They Suck I bought some from CompUSA and returned them and told them they sucked!!!:) As other members said RITEK!!! Happy shopping!! Also they are cheaper online.

There are two solutions to your problem:
- Use better media such as Ritek.
- Reduce your file size to 4000M or below. Relatively to the laser head, the speed at the rim is much faster than the inside portion of the disc; thus, it is harder for the head to burn perfect data onto the cheap media; and that is why you have problem mostly at the end of a movie.

Well, just my two cents.

Cheers,

I'll be ordering Ritek media this week :) But I have had good burns with the Memorex DVD+RW media I just bought. Copied the movies that were having problems and they play fine on my standalone DVD player.
One thing though, if the previous problem was burn issues on the cheap media, then why was the skipping never in the same spot???? I mean, if the data was not burned correctly into the media, wouldn't the problem always happen in the same spot????
Thanks.

I too have had no problems using the Memorex DVD+RW , in my drives anyway.
It isn't normally the data thats corrupt on the DVD-R, just that the drives/players have trouble reliably reading the data the nearer the edge of the disk you go. That is why some people say dont fill the disk to the edge so as to try to avoid these problems. Pc drives however tend to be a bit better quality (some) or you can adjust their reading speed so as to get the data off.

I have heard of memorex and Verbatim +RW media which are not made by CMC magnetics, but Mitsubishi- which should be great. However, I have failed to find any of these where I live- all Memorex I've found are el cheapo CMC media.

Now that is a good question ;) as I have had the same thing happen but not for that last 20 rips.... I guess I have found a decent generic brand of blanks for now :)

How can you tell who made the Memorex media????
Most burning programs provide such info, but anyway you might also try THAT one. There is also a product code stamped to the inner circle of the media, but I cannot know all codes used by Memorex.

Also DVDinfo or DVD Decrypter (in 'ISO - read mode') will show you the Manufacturer ID.
The printing on the front of the disk is not always 'proof' of the manufacturer (dye used). Manufacturer id given by software is. Sadly you can only do this once you have purchased the media.

Here's another newbie question :) I've been having good luck with the Memorex DVD-RW disks I purchased. But one funny thing I noticed is that after some of the disks are burned, there are small colored spots on the bottom of the disk. The disks play fine, but the spots have me concerned. What are they??? Thanks.
