but wouldnt the 2.0 be to old for a new motherboard? I got this one about 3 years ago... it seems kinda old

If your "old" mobo supports 8X AGP and USB 1.1(but 2 preferred ;)),there's no need to buy another one yet......just buy another videocard and check if your powersupply has enough power to deliver....

The AGP version of the 6600GT should be found for +/- 270-280 $ AUS.....

wow i thought the 6600GT would be around $500 it sounds expencive with that GT behind it. So i could use my 2.0 spend $280 on the video card $200 on motherboard? or more?... $50 on powersupply,$50 on the case i think,$150 on some ram anything else? thats 730 :) i can do that i think

one thing to check before laying out ANY money on a load of upgrades is ... for the same amount you are going to spend ... is it possible to buy a whole new system with everything in it minus the monitor ..that you need without the hassle of rebuilding totally !?

something worth looking into :D

A 2.0GHz Intel CPU with a decent graphics card, should game adequately - with a TNT2, only games of about 5 years ago or more would be usable.

In AGP, the 9800 (nothing, PRO or XT) should be a decent card, without spending an insane amount (unless you are commited to keeping the AGP card in your next upgrade, by which time AGP could be on the wane) - at the moment, you can get motherboards with either, though it seems, not BOTH (there may be a few).

Another "hedge your bets" option, is the the few AMD motherboards that can take the cheaper 754 OR the 939 - only to be recommended if you have thoughs of going for a cheaper 754 CPU now, with the option to upgrade, as the ones reviewed normally have a weaker chipset than a "performance" 939.

But unless there is something else wrong, all you really need is a decent AGP card in your current system - that kind of machine should never be carrying a TNT2 - even a Geforce 2MX is more powerful - and that is now the kind of thing you find on computer fair junk tables - most importantly, the TNT2 does not have any hardware T&L capability, and that is a basic requirement for any games of the past few years - and that is now left behind by the directX 8 and 9 capabilities - and you can get a once-great card like a Radeon 8500 or Geforce 4 Ti4200 (both good DX8 hardware) pretty cheap - a bit dated now, bot still a couple of orders of magnitude better than a prehistoric TNT2

my whole system that i have now is old though. The only thing i could reuse is the cpu. The motherboard thats in it now uses SDram so i dont think i can still use that anymore. im going to reuse the monitor, soundcard, dvd drives and whatever else i can though.

one last question before i buy.

Does AMD cpu's have any bad problems like overheating easy? Because my comptuer gets used by me my brother and sister so its usually on for a while. I was at a friends house and he had an asus-x motherboard and amd2600 he just bought it about 4 days ago and we turned it on and it came up with an overheated message and crashed and reset and everytime it got to the windows xp loading thing it reset again. That happened about 20 times before he turned it off. Would that be the motherboard or cpu?

YES they do get very hot .... unfortunately :( .... but with a good quality heat sink and fan they run just fine :)

I run my 2.2amd 24 hrs a day 7 days a week ...but this is my heat pipe and fan lol :)

see image :)

costs about £21 here in the uk but works great no over heat problems at all :)

the cpu that im getting comes with a fan on it will that make me able to use the comptuer for a longer time? or will it still come up with an overheat msg?

damn so intel has better heat resistance?

Not the latest versions......they tend to overheat more than the latest Athlons...

BTW,my 3200 XP runs @ 47° C normal load and max 53° heavy load(playing games,video encoding.)

Your friend's computer CPU isn't correctly installed.......probably a problem with the fitting of the heatsink,a broken heatsink fan,or the heatsink paste not correctly applied...seen that a dozen of times on computers ......

are you overclocking your comptuer or anything? im not going to overclock anything in mine. I read some articles and people say there cpu gets upto 80 degrees and restarts. If that does happen to me how could i fix it? could i swap the amd2800 for my old 2.0?

get a better heat sink and fan than what you have currently a more heavy duty one :)

or an over clockers type heat sink and fan which mine is :)

it has a HEAT PIPE down the centre thats filled with HEAT dispersal OIL to reduce the heat more :)

the fan on the back blows air across the multiple fins running its full height :)

A lot of us here use various types of heavy duty sinks and fans as a lot of us do a lot of HEAVY gameplay or a lot of intense video conversions so the processor gets very hot when under strain :)

maby you just need to find one to suit your needs :)

why go backwards and drop processor speed ?!

oh ok. But the heatsink you have seems huge. does it sit inside the case or do i have to cut out some of my case to let it sit half in half out or anything? im leaving to the swapmeet in about 20 minutes :)

No,mine is not overclocked......and as I said in my previous post;if you get temps that high, there's something wrong with your hardware installation...

You can't swap different architecture processors on the same mobo......no Intel will fit on an AMD mobo and vice-versa...
There are several software tools for temperature monitoring......speedfan,motherboard monitor to name a few....
several motherboard manufacturers have their own,for example,Asus has it's AsusProbe...

@ Vipey,
Nice heatsink,bro!!!! :D
I went for this one:
